\"9DqOoP9\"<\/a>We live in a world where fantasies are manifested in the drop of a dime. We can access our fantasies online, we can purchase them, and with enough money we have the ability to live out our fantasies through any means we deem necessary. “The Girlfriend Experience” is about those fantasies and the lengths we’re willing to go to have them lived out. Soderbergh examines the man of today and what situations would indicate their need for companionship. Chelsea is an escort but not the typical one.<\/p>\n

She makes a killing managing herself not just as an escort but as a girlfriend. Paid with a hefty fee she fulfills the role of the girlfriend playing the therapist and the girlfriend through various scenarios. In some instances she’ll basically spend a job listening to someone vent their frustrations about their life as she plays the shoulder to cry on, while on other jobs she’ll be the embodiment of the fantasy woman in her clients life, the young beautiful girl willing to do anything at her man’s requests. She doesn’t spend too much time on semantics when asked about her job. She’s very truthful about her purpose as a career girl and takes pride in providing something more than sex.<\/p>\n

She’s always the object of desire and emotion and is skilled in the ways that she’s often the listener and never allows herself to become attached to her clients. In her debut performance porn actress Sasha Grey gives a very strong and surprising performance as the ultimate dream girl. Soderbergh never allows us to gain a full view of what type of woman we’re dealing with and prefers to sift through the various jobs (and men) Chelsea commits to and never indicates if she has a solid relationship in her life. As a character and a real life working girl, Chelsea is filled with mystique and an enigmatic sultry persona who is struggling to fulfill her clients wishes while keeping up with the rise in competition.<\/p>\n

Soderbergh gives us a view of not just Chelsea but of men all of whom have their wealth and fame yet still seek that love in their life, of course personified through Chelsea. Chelsea doesn’t always sleep with her clients and can sometimes act as\u00a0 someone who is there to listen to her clients sulk over their life and career, so Soderbergh asks us: Is this really considered an affair if there’s never any actual love making going on?<\/p>\n

Can Chelsea be considered a prostitute if she sometimes never manages to fulfill and sexual fantasies? And can she be considered a sophisticated escort if she resorts to slumming it? All questions are posed as Soderbergh leaves Chelsea a debatable figure in his work and ultimately leaves us with a high note that leaves her character a further developed mystery not just to her clients but to the audience. I’m not usually a fan of Soderbergh, but “The Girlfriend Experience” is an original look at the life of a unique escort who must live up to everyone’s expectations in order to survive in her world. Sasha Grey gives a sympathetic performance as the ultimate fantasy with a stand out debut.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
