Director Richard Donner’s adventure film is the Hardy Boys Meets Indiana Jones and for the most part it’s an entertaining call back to fodder like “The East Side Kids,” which keeps in line with Spielberg’s ode to his childhood cinema.

Mikey and Brand are told that their house will be demolished and a brand new country club erected in place of their neighborhood. The brothers share the terrible news with their best friends, Chunk, Data, and Mouth, who suggest that they find something valuable to sell. Nicknamed The Goonies, the boys discover an old map supposedly pinpointing the exact location of notorious pirate One Eyed Willie’s hidden treasure. They decide to give fate a chance and see if there really is a treasure waiting to be uncovered. On their mission they have to face off against dangerous obstacles including a murderous family of mobsters that also want the mythical treasure.

“The Goonies” is the banner eighties kids film with a slew of great kids actors from the decade getting in to a harrowing adventure that begins on good intentions. The movie can be a bit grating and loud at times, but it’s saved by the performances, including Sean Astin, Jonathan Qe Kan, Martha Plimpton, Joe Pantoliano, and Corey Feldman, respectively. It’s also tough to beat the theme song from Cyndi Lauper which plays throughout the film. All in all I much prefer the knock off “Monster Squad” when all is said and done, but I respect the legacy put down by “The Goonies.”

In either case, “The Goonies” garners a special edition upgrade from Warner, as well as various other editions including a Steelbook and deluxe box set for fanatics. The picture comes in 4K (2160p) resolution, and a 2:35.1 aspect ratio.

The release from Warner includes the 4K UHD version along with the original BD release, and the Digital Copy.
