You could easily go to the book or find the cliff notes for Stephen King’s original novel, but who says CBS is following that ending to a tee? Frank Darabont changed the ending to “The Mist,” and Stanley Kubrick completely changed “The Shining” so if you know what the dome is, you’re likely wrong about what the writers have planned for it.

Knowing Stephen King’s propensity for repetition, the dome is likely either something involving aliens, or something involving some religious hokum. Right now I’m theorizing aliens have decided to conserve this town in lieu of an apocalypse, invasion or natural disaster. Who knows at this point? I was fairly interested throughout the duration of “Under the Dome,” and appreciated the more chaotic repercussions of this dome, as well as the potential for horror within this dome.

I mean, how long until the air runs out? How long until the food runs out? Will people begin resorting to cannibalism if things go from bad to worse? Like every other King novel, there’s a small town filled with sins, mysteries, and secrets. There are corrupt politicians, and important town folk with their own skeletons they want to keep in the closet that may rise to the surface thanks to the dome, and of course, there are a couple of towns folks falling in to seizures giving hints as to what is going on.

They’re muttering things about stars falling in lines, while the local radio station is picking up mysterious frequencies that inevitably fills them in that the town is covered by a dome and not a gigantic transparent wall. There are some wonderful moments of carnage where trucks crash in to the glass, and a woman is found with her hand cut off from the dome, but the first episode mainly plants the seeds for major sub-plots. I’m wondering how long this could possibly last. Surely, “Under The Dome” could be material for an epic mini-series, but as an eight year series with a revolving door of cast members? Who knows? “Under the Dome” could become amazing over the season, but at this moment it has a lot of foot work to keep me hooked.

Now airing on CBS.
