I love that it’s exciting, adventurous, and challenging. I really love working in the genre because it is an incredibly entertaining way to confront more serious ideas, themes, and issues.

Who inspires you in your work and in life?
Other people, other artists, going after their dreams — whatever that may be. The hard work, courage, drive, and passion that takes is infectious. Those are also the kind of people I want to work with.

Women in horror have made great strides, but it’s clear that a lot of work is still needed to make it a most inclusive genre. To you, what is the importance of a movement like Women in Horror Month?
It’s so important because it draws attention to who is telling these stories. I think we all love films and storytelling because it gives us different perspectives and experiences then our own. It only makes sense that the more diversity we have behind the camera, the more diverse stories we will get to experience.

What would you tell an up-and-coming creative in the world of horror who sees that being a woman/identifying as a woman as something that makes it so much more difficult at times?
Personally, I think getting rid of that type of thinking is what’s important. I believe in the power of positive thinking. I think believing in yourself is more important when it comes to accomplishing something than anything else. Having a chip on your shoulder takes space in your brain and soul away from focusing on accomplishing your goals and – I think – that’s how we make a difference.

What are your favorite bits of helpful advice that you have received about your work or your field?
To make sure you really love a story (or idea) before you decide to bring it to life. To make sure you know why you have to tell this story. Why are you so passionate about it? You’ll find out if you’re not…if you don’t care enough. Because that story or film takes so much work to bring to life – that you just won’t have the energy if it doesn’t mean everything to you.

In honor of celebrating Women in Horror Month, who do you believe viewers should keep an eye on in terms of the creative ladies in horror?
Prano Bailey-Bond (Censor). Natasha Kermani (Lucky).
