Written by Eytan Rockaway and Robert Rockaway and directed by the former,\u00a0Lanksy\u00a0is the kind of biography-style film that grabs the attention and doesn\u2019t let go until the end. While it\u00a0is far from a short feature, it could easily have been longer, included more details, and possibly been a mini-series while keeping its interest. As it is, it covers a lot of ground, some of it as narration, some of it as flashback, and a bit of a wrap-around story of sort covering the life of the writer he hired to take care of his story. The film is one that fans of criminal history and fans of history in general even should love. There is a lot in here, some of it\u00a0feeling almost made up, but really, which parts are made up and which are true is a mystery that is fun to follow and watch unfold.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the titular role of Meyer Lansky, Harvey Keitel gives a sometimes nuanced, sometimes more in your face performance. His work here shows his talent truly, letting the material shine while giving it life in a careful balance of his performance with what needed to be on the screen. He\u2019s not stealing scenes, he\u2019s not chewing scenery, he\u2019s just being. Many actors need to watch this performance and learn from it. Playing opposite him in the storytelling parts of the film is Sam Worthington who clearly is bouncing some of his energy into his own performance, giving one that works perfectly and one that will surprise some who have mostly seen him in scifi extravaganzas and other films of the type. These two have a good back and forth established early on and make their sections of the film become favorites even though most of the actual action is during the flashbacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another aspect of the film that shows talent and filmmaking knowledge is the cinematography. The film looks fantastic with careful, calculated images by Peter Flinckenberg. The way the film looks helps bring the viewer in and create the atmosphere throughout. The setting being in 1981 and before leads to a need for cinematography that understands the lighting of each period as well as the look of each period the film spends time in.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lansky is a film that does not feel like a summer movie, so for some it will feel odd that it is coming out in late June, however, it\u2019s a great counter-programming title for those looking to avoid the tentpoles and the big budget showcases. This is a film that is better watched without distraction, with time to fully take in the story and the artistry at play throughout.
