The film takes the basic set up of a group of military men on a mission with an overseer coming to visit to get them to make a detour and twists it a little with some extra weirdness. Sadly, the film is mostly predictable with a few thankful-for moments where things get a bit more surprising. Being a film with a familiar idea and a lot of scenes that seem like they would fit in just about any other film of its subgenre, those seldom moments are very welcome. There is something here in the story for fans of supernatural war films, but unfortunately, most others will check out of the story pretty early on. Of course, this does not mean it is not a fairly well-crafted film, but it’s also not the best made film out there either.

One point that stands out is the lighting. While the cinematography by Eric Gustavo Petersen and Denis Sorogin is decent in terms of framing and how the images move throughout the story, the lighting is at times completely useless, lighting the characters in ways that make it very difficult to see what is going on or who is speaking, and at times ok at best. The film is brought down by this as one would want to see what is going on at all times, especially as things start getting dark. Thankfully, the last part of the film is better lit, allowing the viewer to better see what is going on once things really ramp up.

The cast here works fairly well, but are left in the dark far too often to let their performances shine. The cast is lead here by Jackson Rathbone who does decently with the material at hand and everything going on. Top billed is Mickey Rourke who is also pretty good, but given not enough scenes to make his part really stand out until the very end. This is definitely a glorified cameo, but it’s also one of his better ones of late. Robert Knepper rounds out the lead cast and does his best Robert Knepper. Those who have seen him in many films will know exactly what that means. He plays his characters all fairly similarly with some small difference. While it works here, it really does feel like he’s just playing a different version of the same man again. The rest of the cast is not seen all that much in the lighting issues and the film doesn’t give the majority of them much in terms of lines. They seem to be ok, but the film didn’t give them much of chance.

WarHunt is a fairly predictable supernatural war film that could have been so much more. That last part of the film, where things culminate is the best of the whole thing with some decent visuals and even some interesting events adding to the story. What leads here though will be solely for fans of the subgenre who really want to see all of its offerings. WarHunt not a bad film, but also not a good one, it sits precariously on the fence and never really goes on either side of it.

World War II American soldiers are sent into the German forest to retrieve important items from a crashed plane.
