As opposed as what one would expect from the director of Excision, Trash Fire, and Tone-Deaf, the film either misses the mark entirely or was made to make fun of the people at the center of its story. Being that it actually hard to tell what the goal is here shows that it is missed entirely. As it is, the film starts off on the fence about its own characters, showing that it could be a comedy where we laugh with them or a parody of them. There is something here that just doesn’t work and it all comes off as possibly mean-spirited. Considering Bates’ past work and that of the cast involved, it seems more-than-like that this is a misfire and not an actual film making fun of outsiders.

Considering that the cast is led by Matthew Gray Gubler, someone who comes off as not having a single mean bone in his body in person and online and as someone who may not live within the norms as well, it does justify the feeling that the film completely misses its mark. Here, MGG does decent work with the character at hand, giving him personality and making his outsider status something that makes sense. His work is as usual good, but perhaps not in the right film. Playing Willow is Angela Sarafyan who comes off a bit like Gubler, giving it her all, but also seemingly not working from the same ton as everyone else at times. Then, the rest of the coven cast comes off as exaggerations of Wiccans, caricatures of people on the edges of society, and downright odd just for the sake of being odd. Having odd characters is something that can work great when done in the right ton and within the right story. The presence of Barbara Crampton and Ray Wise in parts that are fun to watch them in, but (for Wise in particular) come off like they do not fit with the rest. All of this comes off completely off and like something is either missing from the story or the viewer is missing something. Clearly, the cast had the best of intentions, but the script/direction went in way that just was not it.

The cinematography, the editing, the music, the set décor, everything else is fairly on point here, so it all adds to the weird feeling one is left with watching the film. Clearly, this was made by talented people on all fronts and yet it leaves the viewer feeling like something is wrong, like the film is making fun of the people it wants the viewers to connect with. Overall, this is a film that suffers from not clearly being a comedy or a parody or a goofball film. There are great performances, some fun moments, some emotional moments, and then there are some scenes that just seem to be there to make fun of the outsiders and be a bit too “look how clever I am” while dealing with subjects that didn’t need to be dealt with this way. The film comes off odd in not a good way and becomes a frustrating watch for fans of the director and lead cast.

In a coven of well-meaning witches, Thorn and Willow lead the group to a better life through understanding, being one with nature, and accepting each other.
