While she’s managed to slay the horror world with her immense performances, she’s also proven she can handle other plains of cinema, case in point the pretty great “The Fallout.” Director Megan Park’s drama handles a very relevant often volatile social topic, exploring the aftermath and what happens when victims simply can’t figure out how to process their grief.

Ortega plays Vada, a young girl who while at school one day barely survives a horrifying school shooting. While hiding in the bathroom with classmate Mia, she’s forced to confront the idea of her mortality and the senseleness of the crime. While she tries to revert to normalcy, she befriends fellow survivor Mia, a young girl with absentee parents who is desperate for companionship. Vada struggles to cope with the incident while also wondering if she can ever really return to her former life.

“The Fallout” relies a lot on the performance from Jenna Ortega who handles the film like a pro. Even if you’re not a fan of the film, there’s no denying Ortega is a genuine actress who conveys various shades of confusion, PTSD, and numbness throughout. Director Park chooses to focus on the idea of Vada fighting her inherent feelings toward that unfolded in her school. Director Park follows Vada as she sleepwalks through the aftermath of the school shooting while dealing with various stumbling blocks. This includes depression, well meaning but over attentive parents, a clingy younger sister, and the realization that inevitably life has to go on.

There are some great moments that convey Vada’s trauma including her attempt to dull her anxiety with ecstasy, and her refusal to use the school bathroom that results in an incident. Ortega works well with all of her co-stars including Maddie Ziegler who is solid in her co-starring role. “The Fallout” never really offers any easy answers, nor does it pretend to have any. Sadly, there are no answers, and no real solutions to what Vada is enduring. With the stark final scene, it’s a soul crushing reminder that Vada’s reality is tragically our collective realities.

Jenna Ortega has gone from former Disney Channel actress to one of the most mesmerizing young actresses in Hollywood.
