Oddly, the history of the Oscars is heavy with classic works that failed to snag a single nomination \u2013 and the reasons for the omissions are among the great mysteries of movie history.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For your consideration, here are 10 beloved films that Academy voters failed to bless with any nominations \u2013 but, somehow, they achieved classic status without Oscar\u2019s blessing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cCity Lights\u201d (1931):<\/strong> Considered by many film scholars to be Charles Chaplin\u2019s masterpiece, \u201cCity Lights\u201d was conspicuously overlooked. Some claim that was because Chaplin stubbornly held on to the silent film format well into the sound era, but F.W. Murnau\u2019s silent \u201cTabu\u201d won the Best Cinematography Oscar that year. Ironically, the Best Picture winner in that year\u2019s competition, \u201cCimarron,\u201d is widely regarded as one of the worst films to snag Hollywood\u2019s grand prize.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZJKfmsuvGHg\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cKing Kong\u201d (1933): <\/strong>Despite the critical and commercial acclaim for \u201cKing Kong\u201d and its extraordinary technical achievements, the Academy was indifferent to its greatness. Producer David O. Selznick lobbied the Academy to grant a special award to Willis O\u2019Brien for his special effects mastery, but his efforts were in vain.  <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MMNICLfHE3M\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cHis Girl Friday\u201d (1940):<\/strong> The pinnacle of screwball comedy, this fast-paced, fast-talking knockout should have been a shoo-in to generate nominations for Best Picture and for director Howard Hawks and stars Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell \u2013 none of whom ever won a competitive Oscar.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dHVvnEWez1M\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cCry, the Beloved Country\u201d (1951):<\/strong> This deeply moving adaptation of Alan Paton\u2019s novel set in apartheid South Africa was too much of a political hot potato for the Academy \u2013 between its quiet condemnation of racial discrimination and leading actor Canada Lee\u2019s fight against the Hollywood blacklist, the film never found its way to the Oscar ballot.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FbRODXnRDlw\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cGentlemen Prefer Blondes\u201d (1953):<\/strong> Another Howard Hawks treasure that the Academy buried \u2013 with its Technicolor glory, memorable costuming and production design, a score with fun new songs and, of course, its voluptuous stars at the peaks of the power, this snub is among the most astonishing in Oscars history.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ern7QwMd7XM\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Searchers\u201d (1956):<\/strong> A forceful argument could be made that this work represented the pinnacle of John Ford\u2019s and John Wayne\u2019s respective careers and the Western genre. But the Academy rarely granted its honors on Westerns, which may explain why this classic was omitted from the year\u2019s nominations.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KvfIsbhIQLA\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cCompulsion\u201d (1959):<\/strong> Richard Fleischer\u2019s jolting dramatization of the Leopold and Loeb case earned him a Director\u2019s Guild of America Award nomination, while Richard Murphy\u2019s screenplay was nominated for the Writers Guild of American Award and stars Orson Welles, Dean Stockwell and Bradford Dillman shared the Best Actor prize from the Cannes Film Festival. And that\u2019s where the film\u2019s awards ended \u2013 nothing from the Academy.<br \/>\n<strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fs6pLELgRPU\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBreathless\u201d (1960):<\/strong> The Academy voters had no problems bestowing nominations on the French New Wave entries \u201cThe 400 Blows\u201d and \u201cHiroshima Mon Amour,\u201d but they couldn\u2019t bring themselves to extend their admiration to Jean-Luc Godard\u2019s innovative drama. Indeed, no Godard film would ever receive an Oscar nomination, and by the time the great director was given an honorary Oscar in 2010 he didn\u2019t bother showing up to the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iAuqDI4EAl4\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAirplane!\u201d (1980):<\/strong> Surely you can\u2019t be serious that this film \u2013 with its too-funny screenplay and to-die-for performances by Leslie Nielsen, Lloyd Bridges and Stephen Stucker \u2013 got passed over? I am serious \u2013 and don\u2019t call me Shirley!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G5neabZ5pVQ\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Terminator\u201d (1984):<\/strong> It is impossible to comprehend that this film couldn\u2019t even get nominated in any of the technical categories \u2013 although its imaginative screenplay deserved commendation. At least it won three Saturn Awards, so someone in the film industry appreciated it.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tYc2jQaM8gM\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Big Lebowski\u201d (1998):<\/strong> The Academy would eventually get around to giving Jeff Bridges an Oscar for 2009\u2019s \u201cCrazy Heart,\u201d but most movie lovers who are not Academy voters will always identify him as The Dude in this 1998 cult classic.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V0aDEvmf5u0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are countless other great films overlooked by the Oscars.
