Adapted from the novel \u2018Maigret et la jeune morte\u2019 by Georges Simenon, the story was adapted for the screen by Patrice Leconte and J\u00e9r\u00f4me Tonnerre with Leconte directing. The film takes a very well-known character to most French (and British) audience who as been brought to the screen many times and puts him in the hands of a fantastic director with an actor who could probably fill these shoes without any effort on screen. In terms of adaptation of a beloved character, this is a great way to bring him and his story to the screen, taking one adventure, if they can be called such, and making the whole film about it, without an extended explanation of the lead character or any sort of clear backstory. Maigret needs no introduction, thus screentime and effort is not wasted on giving him one this time. The writing here is solid and the direction is exactly what the film needed. The talent and experience that Patrice Leconte brings to the film show on the screen while also being as little \u201cshowy\u201d as it can be. This is how an adaption should be done, erasing one\u2019s self and ego and letting the story and character take center stage without too much added into the mix. The film lets Maigret be Maigret and it works absolutely great here.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the lead is the absolutely solid every time he gets a part G\u00e9rard Depardieu giving a subdued, quiet performance, one that is perfect for Maigret. Soon after he appears on the screen, it\u2019s easy to forget he\u2019s one of the most famous French actors, or actors period, in the world and simply believe him as the character. The man can act and he knows how to give this character the right level of personality, presence, and gravitas. The character is well-known, the face behind the character is well-known, both come together to bring this story to the screen in just the right ways. Playing alongside him is Jade Labeste as Betty who is charming, ready to take some risk for her character, and lovely to watch. Another stand-out performance is that of Anne Loiret as Mme Maigret. She gets a short time to make an impression, and even a day later, her performance comes to mind while writing about this, so she clearly made the right choices and gave the wife of the famous commissioner life in the right way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The film at hand is one that is dark in terms of tone and how it looks. The cinematography by Yves Angelo shows that darkness can be used effectively, that a grey universe can show so much and be attractive to the eye. The film has a quiet visual aspect that works in letting the actors do their work and letting the story develop without being too in your face. The cinematography gives this film tone and personality while staying a bit almost erased in a way. The look of the film is clearly deliberate and the choices made in terms of lighting and framing give it a lush darkness look. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maigret is a carefully calculated and planned film, one that clearly had a lot of planning and pre-production to get everything just right. From the costumes to the decors, the performances to the cinematography, everything here is clearly studied and made to fit the story and the source material. Maigret has been adapted to the screen, big and small, many times over and this one is a solid adaptation that lets the character exist and breath in this universe where his life is well-advanced, his career well-known, and his work needed. This is the kind of film that knows what it wants and how it wants it, giving the viewer exactly what they need to appreciate it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
