Here, a news story inspired the story which was then brought to star Devanny Pinn who was pregnant and wanting to work during the pandemic. A small cast of 3 people total, one of them on the phone, a limited number of locations close to home, a director and star who happen to be married, a real pregnancy so none of that fake belly stuff, and some real talent easily available to them are what made Frost happen the way that the public can now see it. Here, the film required a particular approach both due to the content therein and due to the star being pregnant herself. The material at hand gets rough, really rough as the film advances and some viewers will find it extremely shocking or disturbing, some won’t be able to deal with it due to how in your face it is. However, for this viewer, it’s the sadness, the desperation, the potential post-partum depression kicking in early, the reaction of a mother whose like is in danger and for who the baby she’s carrying is a focus, but she must also survive herself. She loses herself in the accident, in being stranded, in the despair of being in a broken-down car, at the edge of a cliff, near the end of her pregnancy with no idea if she’ll make it out alive. The film takes this head on and without fear of showing too much while still holding back in terms of not falling into voyeurism, a very careful balance that takes this film from a shocker to one with something to say.

Now, the acting! This film’s success hinges on the performances, mainly that of lead Devanny Pinn and this is HER film. She takes it and runs with it. It absolutely shows that this is a labor of love (no pun intended) for her. She gives it her all, puts herself mind, body, soul and pregnancy on the screen. She allows herself to go places that are downright courageous for any actress, even more so for one who was 6 and 9 months pregnant while filming. Some of the scenes here are difficult to watch and one can only wonder how difficult they were to film. Having learned that the main sequences, the hardest ones, had to be shot without sound and then adding the vocalization to keep her able to get through them only drives the point home even more. Pinn gives possibly her best performance ever here (only a few are missing from this viewer’s list of watched films). She’s powerful, she’s emotional, and she doesn’t go too far. She pushes herself to the limit, but doesn’t cross it in terms of quality in her acting. This is the kind of film and performance people will remember her from now on. Playing her father is Vernon Wells who does quite well and holds his own here. Playing the only other character on screen by way of a video call is Venus DeMilo Thomas who is good, but doesn’t really get enough time to fully develop her character. As mentioned, this is Pinn’s film and she makes the most of all of her scenes, really bringing it home, and giving viewers a performance they can connect with.

In terms of the usual aspects we cover here, the film’s cinematography makes the most out of being stuck in a car for most of the film. The work by Kelton Jones is fantastic for most of the film, with the exception of a few shaky cam sequences that feel out of place, but can easily be ignored and moved on from. The special effects here are on point, particularly the practical effects in the pivotal scene that may make some folks turn the film off. These effects are just the right amount of gross and disturbing. Yes, they are realistic enough to make this hard to watch, but that was needed here.

Frost is a powerful film about survival, the toll an accident can take on someone mentally, the hardships of late pregnancy, and how one person can lose a bit of themselves and their mental capacities when it all piles up in the worse way possible. This film won’t be easy to watch for most and most will mostly see the act in the last third of the film as what it is in terms of visual horror, but the main thing to pay attention to here is mental anguish along with the sadness of it all. This is more about mental state than the gore on the screen. Devanny Pinn carries this film and elevates it, allowing herself to go places where no woman should probably go for the sake of the performance. The fact that she was pregnant throughout the filming of this makes it even more impressive and a hard-core performance.

A pregnant woman goes to visit her estranged father at his remote mountain house.
