\"\"<\/a>It seemed like such a sure thing. Take one of the scarier aspects from one of the best horror movies of the decade, and give it its own origin movie. Except, the end results of “Annabelle” are about as boring as its origin. I would rather have seen the original story about the rag doll than this sequel, spin off, or whatever the studios are calling it. I’m not entirely sure what the studios are painting these movies with the Warren ghost hunting duo as some sort of avengers team, but “Annabelle” is a step in the wrong direction with a movie that goes absolutely nowhere.<\/p>\n

It even borders on racist when you consider the only African American character in the entire movie has to sacrifice herself in order to allow the plain Jane Caucasian mother to keep her life and stay with her child. Folks might be disappointed to know that not only does “Annabelle” ruin the origin of the doll, but it also ends up explaining her as something of a really pissed off spirit of a Manson disciple. I’m sure Annabelle Wallis and Ward Horton are fine actors in their own right, but they portray two of the most vanilla characters in what is supposed to be a deep story about horror separating a mom whose main fear is losing her newborn child.<\/p>\n

All of the pathos and familial themes from “The Conjuring” are gone in favor of more rote and dull sub-plots and character exposition that fails to clutch the gut like the original film did. The set up does make for some eerie moments including a break in, and a creepy play on cults, but once you realize the doll is only second banana in her own movie, it falls apart very quickly. Most of “Annabelle” is boring with inexplicable moments of horror, characters introduced and then written off, and a finale lacking in any kind of terror or sense of personal harm. There’s not even a mention much of the Warrens, which stinks considering at one time the studios planned to continue their exploits. I was so ready for a horrifying sequel and prequel, but “Annabelle” just fails and borders on being a waste of time, quite often.<\/p>\n

There are eight deleted scene all adding up to twenty minutes of nothing, an there’s a thirty minute production featurette with segments featuring “The Curse of Annabelle,” “Bloody Tears of Possession,” “Dolls of the Demon” and “A Demonic Process.” There’s no commentary or anything really of substance or excusing the film, oddly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
