Ferrari made “Cyn” which was a sort of prequel, and now we have the animated short “Red Princess Blues” which is a seven minute short being shopped around as a potential launching point for a live action revenge action thriller named “Red Princess Blues.” And you know what? I think Ferrari may pull it off.

Ferrari is one of the few directors who can capture the grind house experience and has all the visual knack of Michael Bay with none of the idiocy, and of course he has a great concept. “Red Princess Blues” may be around sooner than we think at this pace. And of course there’s Paula Garces who just needs to marry me now. If you’ve seen any of the man’s movies, he has big guns, hot women, and great action. What’s not to love? Until that time comes, we have “Red Princess Blues” a seven minute animated prequel/preamble to the live action movie voiced by the gorgeous Garces, is a beautifully animated lead up to the live action film with some fantastic direction from Dan Cregan.

Simply, this is a stunning introduction into the key players of the film including Princess and Nino. Princess, plagued with a life of violence, is forced to live with a cold caretaker. But discovering his weapons proves beneficial after revealing an accidental talent for knife throwing. “Red Princess Blues” promises many things to the audience, and I hope we get it soon. Princess is a fascinating character and really has enough spunk and charisma to prove a compelling heroine. Garces approaches the film with great enthusiasm and gives a great performance. There’s also Larry Robinson who is strong as Princess’s mentor.

Very much in the vein of the O-Ren Ishii flashbacks in “Kill Bill,” Cregan and Enigma Factory reveal what led to this life of sheer bloodshed, and ask us if we want more of her. And the answer is yes: Yes I do. I want more of this story, and I want more Garces. The Enigma Factory creates a beautiful animated prologue with some dazzling imagery including some gorgeous rainfall, and a fantastic climax. “Red Princess Blues” may just prove to be a great footnote in a potentially wonderful movie, and it’s one of my favorite indies of the year. Come on Hollywood, you have Alex and Dan at your doorway, give these motherfuckers a chance! “Red Princess Blues” is a wonderful introduction in to the world Ferrari and co. hope to bring to us and I enjoyed it a great deal.

Okay, so here the dealio: Alex Ferrari, one of my current favorite indie directors is hoping to create his first big budget, or moderately budgeted action thriller, and has with him a pretty good star in the way of the luscious Paula Garces.
