Max Weinstein ushers in the issue with another really insightful editorial and profiles many modern and contemporary masters of horror cinema. “The Old, The New, and the In Between” is a great look at the modern works of Dario Argento and Vincenzo Natali, two cinematic juggernauts that offered fans their own unique genre entries in 2013. Argento, of course gave us “Dracula,” while Natali released the very good “Haunter.” I don’t know if I’m a fan of the directors bemoaning the new generation of horror, but I do enjoy the consideration that there are some great auteurs out there, working to deliver some great genre titles, like Jason Eisener, or Ti West.

Speaking of great directors, “Evolutionary Off Shoot” is a behind the scenes look at BobCat Goldthwait’s newest film “Willow Creek,” which I anxiously await. “Unboxing Jennifer” is an interesting look at Jennifer Lynch, filmmaker and daughter of David Lynch who discusses her experiences in Hollywood and her struggles to be taken seriously as a filmmaker with a valid contribution to film. Probably the least interesting segment of the issue is “The Incredible Sulk” from Conor Sweeney of the oddly beloved Astron 6. For reasons I still have trouble comprehending, Sweeney and his troop from Astron 6 are cult heroes, mainly for making really bad horror movies that people pretend are entertaining because they’re bad. Of course, Sweeney rants on about how bloggers excuse bad horror films, and are dishonest about the state of modern horror, which made me roll my eyes derisively.

I also love the opening statement that Sweeney couldn’t name ten great American horror films from the last ten years. Again, I roll my eyes in your general direction. The editorial is mainly placed for fans of Astron 6 that follow the group’s cinematic exploits loyally, but I had a difficult time finishing it. I also love how the editorial denounces films about torture and porn and in the middle of the rant, there’s a picture of a blood soaked butt. I really hope this editorial was meant to be ironic and tongue in cheek. Good for Astron 6 for making their mark. I also appreciate that Conor Sweeney wants movie critics to be more honest. The editorial sucked and I really have yet to find anything worth watching from Astron 6. Let’s go out for a soda some time, Conor! “The Gatekeepers” is an interesting look at the new anthology gore picture “The Profane Exhibit” which examines the new film, and misunderstood horror directors.

I doubt Zombie will be remembered beyond a footnote of a musician attempting the film business, but there is some interesting information about horror veterans and the cycle of their filmmaking as beloved filmmakers to pariahs among their fan base. Alexandra West reviews “Insidious” in “The Devil Made Us Watch It,” and “I Maestri Ritornano” is a look at the history of Italian horror, and how it changed American horror. Not to mention how it’s sorely missing from the modern face of the genre. “Post Corman’s World” is an interesting and very entertaining look at how Roger Corman changed horror, and how horror hasn’t changed very much in the realm of Hollywood and how they view the genre as a moneymaking tool and not much else. “A Matter of Perspective” is a great look at how Franck Khalfoun approached remaking “Maniac,” and finally “Eye on the Future” looks over the off beat comic book “Private Eye,” and explores the career of creator Brian K. Vaughan.

Buy Diabolique Issue 19 Now!

Diabolique is back with issue 19 of their truly entertaining horror magazine that makes great strides in breaking out of the doldrums of mainstream horror in favor of indie and underground.
