It was released around the holidays in 2022, and while it does compliment the Christmas aesthetic, it works wonderfully as a genuine fable about empathy and innocence.

Set in a snowy landscape, a young boy (Jude Coward Nicholl) is looking for a way home and comes across a friendly mole. The mole (Tom Hollander) is anxious to eat cake and the two pair to reach their destination. Along the way they meet a mysterious fox (Idris Elba) who is tracking them, and finally a kindly white horse (Gabriel Byrne) that befriends the trio with the same intent of helping them find their destinations.

“The Boy, The Mole…” is such a delightful, simple movie filled with incredible animation. The film looks like a moving painting with computer animation delicately duplicating the strokes of a painting down to every element. Mackesy doesn’t try to add too much to his narrative, instead sticking a lot to the ambiguity of the tale through and through. There’s not a lot of explanation about why our characters are where they are, and what’s waiting the boy at home. All the tale is about really is the idea of showing empathy towards each other, and the journey that allows us to learn from others when we reach the end.

Sometimes the destination isn’t important. Sometimes the things we learn in an effort to reach our destination can be so much more meaningful. I really did like the individual personalities that were at play with molding the boy (the voice work is immaculate), and the ideas about what a home truly is when we get down to it. A home is a home, no matter what it looks like. “The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and the Horse” truly doles out some worthwhile advice and life lessons while building a fun, stunning, fantasy adventure that anyone can jump in to.

Now streaming on Apple TV+.

“Asking for help isn’t giving up.
