It essentially feels in place this season to give Daryl more to do, while also focusing more on Beth. If you suspected Beth is nothing but a spoiled little shit since season two, than you’d be correct. Granted, she’s sweet, kind, and strong, but she’s also a sheltered little girl who’d rather do nothing than have a drink, than survive. She’ll go through walkers, and risk being eaten just to have her first drink. But then after spending the night in the trunk of a car in the middle of a herd, who can blame Beth for wanting to have her first drink before she croaks?

The trunk scene is easily the best moment of the episode, and a great hook to lure in viewers. Daryl and Beth are pretty much in the same boat as everyone else from the prison. They have nothing left, and even worse: the spaces to hide are shrinking more and more by the hour. Most of “Still” is based around exploring the mind and back stories of Daryl and Beth. The odd pairing works well for the series, since they’ve mostly been distant since season two and haven’t really had the chance to be in the same room. This offers a chance for the writers to play Beth off of Daryl, giving us a look at two polar opposite characters. Daryl has lost all hope and is now just running around and getting by day by day, while Beth is more interested in the bigger picture.

The episode moves forward in her quest to have her first drink. Likely as a final wish since their confrontations with death become more and more dangerous by the day. Beth barely steps a foot out of their camp before she’s almost spotted by a trio of walkers shambling through the trees. Their quest through a local country club is also filled with a ton of close calls and offers both characters a chance to see where they stand in this situation. Beth is insistent on proving she is not the victim anymore, thus she bursts in to rooms, and takes on walkers all by herself. Daryl on the other hand is growing more complacent and seems less intent on making it. This becomes very clear when he attempts to shoot a squirrel for a meal and misses it.

Something Daryl has never done in all the time we’ve known him. When we first see Daryl in the series he’s wearing a necklace of squirrel carcasses, so this is Daryl at his lowest. The finale where Beth and Daryl hole up in a ramshackle cabin provides insight in to Daryl and Beth’s out look on life. Beth was very much the sheltered little girl with almost no obstacles in life before the apocalypse. And Daryl’s life was filled with abuse, violence, and crime. We also finally find out what he did before the dead began to rise. Which is incredibly depressing. But what becomes evident in the end of the episode is that Daryl and Beth were nobodies.

They weren’t important people. And that’s been the key aspect of the series since episode one. Everyone that’s managed to survive thus far were average everyday individuals with no actual importance in the world. There were no politicians, or celebrities, and Beth and Daryl at least have that detail that binds them together. “Still” has no real importance to the overall arc of the season, but it’s at least a great bit of insight in to Daryl and Beth’s lives, and likely the last gasp before characters begin to fall before the finale. And knowing the show, we’re due to bid farewell to more characters.

“Still” is filler, but really good filler.
