The story has some good ideas, but the execution is absolutely not on point. This leads to a film that falls incredibly flat throughout, leading to making it a difficult watch not because it’s too bloody or too violent or too hard core, but because it’s just boring. It’s hard to come out here and say that an indie film is boring because there is an audience for anything out there, but this one is just so flat. There is zero excitement here and the behind-the-scenes aspect of the mockumentary is just not helping. There are some fun ideas, but they all come off as being squashed or not explored deeply enough. The film wants to be clever so badly, it gets in its own way. The mockumentary style is something that can absolutely work (see The Once and Future Smash, La Furie du Demon, etc), but this isn’t it. Something is missing. Many things are missing. The film doesn’t do much of its promising premise and it’s frustrating to watch.

The cast members here do what they can, and it must be given that the selection is decent for these folks. A mockumentary, much like a found footage film cannot have faces that are too easily recognizable, or it breaks the effect, it takes the viewer out of the suspension of disbelief and just makes it a movie and not a potential documentary about real people. Unless that is if those people are playing themselves (see La Furie du Demon). Here, the cast does ok, but given the film’s writing and directing, there is just so much they can do. Some of the characters are in on the situation and others are not, something that is kept until much later in the film, showing that either these characters are good actors within the film’s scheme, or they may not have been told the full implications of their characters in the story. Nonetheless, most of the performances are, like the film, quite flat. There is some good here and there, some of the cast members are clearly making more of an effort, but overall, this is not a great situation and pointing out who did better or worse is not something that will serve the film, or this review, at all.

Now, when it comes to the cinematography, there is something interesting going on here. There are two styles at play, that of the documentary crew within the film and a few scenes that look to have been shot in most films’ style, the omniscient camera that sees all. This is interesting and does work here, but it’s still missing something. Thankfully, the film is a mocumentary and not found footage, so it’s shot with more stable cameras and movements, something to be thankful for here. The editing works with these images pretty well and does create a pace and some erratic scenes and sequences, especially near the end of the film, so that is something to be celebrated here.

In the end, this film is more an annoyance than anything else. It’s an annoyance because it had so much potential and here we are with a flat as can be film that should have been more… something. There is so much missing here, so many missed opportunities, that it’s a wonder what happened. Yes, some will love it, but it’s hard to see why as it’s just a flat movie all around.

A filmmaker shooting his last film, his masterpiece, is followed by a documentary crew as he works on his horror film all done with practical effects, a bit too practical even.

[12
219,477,673,703
post-40928","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-comedy","tag-horror","tag-mockumentary","tag-mystery
["GET
