Directed by Kensuke Sonomura, Bad City is a mafia versus mafia versus cops film that has a whole lot going on. There\u2019s a back story, but most people will be coming here to see the mayhem, the fights, and well, the Tak Sakaguchi (who was the main reason behind wanting to see this film if we are honest here). However, the film is more than just fights and violence and crime and bad versus justifiably bad. The film has an interesting story of a disgraced cop being pulled out of jail as he is possibly the only man able to lead a team in investigating a recent string of gruesome crimes. He\u2019s given some of his previous team back and a newbie who may be in over her head. The other side of things, the clearly bad guys, is filled with layers and layers of evil and violent people, from a woman who wants revenge, to the local mafia, to a mega-corporation boss, to a hired killer, there is a lot going here and if one loses track of the film for just a few minutes, they\u2019ll to start over. This film is a lot, but it\u2019s well-done in how it brings it all to the screen. It’s an entertaining film with maybe a few too many twists and turns at times, but once the credits roll, it\u2019s a satisfying watch.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cast here is solid, giving good performances and fighting like hell when need be. Of course, the appeal of Tak Sakaguchi is what will get some here and while he is in top shape and doing his best silent killer, he is not the lead and is not the one you get to see the most of. Actually, his screen time is limited, but impactful from his first appearance on the screen to his unexpected last. Fans of his will be happy, even if they\u2019ll wish he had gotten more screen time. The lead here is Hitoshi Ozawa who is fantastic as the gruff police investigator who spent some time in jail for a killing on the job, being sprung out to help solve the current string of cases that seem to be insolvable by the current teams on them. His work here is good, he does gruff and grumpy with a side of quiet determination quite well. He\u2019s the central character here really and he\u2019s a great casting choice. Working as his assistant, or his team, we get Masanori Mimoto, Akane Sakanoue, and (one actor whose name could not be grabbed from the credits and IMDB seems to have omitted his name, apologies sir, will correct once obtained). This team is one that works great together on screen as characters, but also as performers. Their work helps get the film moving and keep the audience involved. The cast overall does quite well here, giving performances that work here and that are on point for the needs of the film. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The film\u2019s cinematography by Moritada Ij\u00fb allows the characters to evolve and to be within the frame without going nuts constantly and moving too much. This is something greatly appreciated here. The way the film is shot also gives the fight a nice central position to everything, something action fans will appreciate for sure. The special effects here are somewhat minimal with a few bits of blood here and there, some wounds, but while the film is bloody, this is not a horror film, it\u2019s the kind of bloody expected from violent fights. It well done though, so it works within the story and adds to the brutality of some of the scenes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bad City is a solid action film with cop\/investigation angle, it brings some new ideas to the table with a solid cast and some well-shot sequences, may they be fights or not. The film is one of those mafia action films worth picking up and checking out. The way the story evolved, how the denouement comes, and how things wrap up are well done and point as well. It\u2019s a solid film from start to finish with a bunch of twists and turns, some of which may not be completely needed, but as they do not work against the film and its story, they are easily ignored and moved on from.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
