Javier Gutierrez, La espera is a slow burn, long building story that really takes the viewer in, doesn’t let them guess where things will go, and doesn’t let them go until the film ends. The story is built in a way that gives the viewer time to think and time to interpret what is going on before it gives them the answers, or some of the answers, to the questions they may have while watching. It’s written and directed carefully, in a very deliberate manner and style. The film is one of those films that is perfect to watch with a festival crowd or in a quiet movie theater, it has a style that lends itself to being seen with a very specific audience or on your own at home. It leads to questions, long thinking bouts, and possibly good conversation with other film fans.

The cast here is led by Victor Clavijo as the man who brought and his wife and his kid to the countryside to make some money without really worrying about their wants and needs. His acting here, especially after his loses his wife and kid, is stunning, giving the right nuances throughout, making the character’s pain show clearly, showing the confusion, the grief, the sadness in just the right way. His work here is solid and needs to be as he has long segments of the film where it’s just him and very little dialog. His performance is one of those that takes over the film and does the most out of the emotions, lines, and lack of either at times. The rest of the cast gets limited screen time, but equally well. Ruth Diaz, in particular, is fantastic.

Something that may not be expected beyond a few short moments here is the extent of the special effects. With the story in mind, it doesn’t seem like a film that would have tons of special effects, practical or otherwise, yet there are a few sequences that truly require special effects and those effects are incredibly well done. The team that put these together went for that uncomfortable feeling you get when something is just off and then let it grow by showing more and more things that just make you go “ugh, yuck”. The film is not centered on special effects, but what there is of them is super well done and shows that the goal was not to make an extreme film, but still to disturb.

In terms of looks, the film is just the right tone and color scheme for the story, which evolves ever so slightly as it goes. The cinematography by Miguel Angel Mora frames the whole thing perfectly, giving scenes the space to just be and giving the characters the right amount of focus throughout. The work here allows the viewer to see everything and just take in the scenes, letting them develop and marinate just right. Of course, the editing works wonders in that as well.

La espera, or The Wait, is a slow burn film done right with just the right amount of disturbing elements to make the viewer question the story and the main character. This is strong film with a stunning central performance, one that calls for a big screen viewing, but also works great on smaller screens at home.

[1284,12
302,349,367,477
post-41269","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-festivalsevents","category-movie-reviews","tag-drama","tag-fantasy","tag-foreign","tag-horror
["GET
