As these beasts drain humans of their life force, Lion-Girl must intervene.

Written and directed by Kurando Mitsutake, basedon the Go Nagai comic book, this action sci-fi romp has a very specific mood and feel that is hard to describe but will appeal to fans of films such as Flash Gordon and maybe Barbarella. The film is one of those post-apocalypse films that has its own universe and lore, one that has a lot of nudity and a lot of mysteries as to the why of things. Here’s the thing about the story, it’s not that great, but it’s not the main reason to see the film. Yeah, that makes sense to some of us. There’s something here, it’s mostly fun, so it’s one of those movies that’s perfect for a party (where all attendees are ok with a lot of nudity). The film has a very specific style and appeal, something that will work great for some and not at all for others.

The cast here works decently well. The parts are somewhat limited in most cases, so the cast does what they can with what they have. The lead, Lion-Girl, is played by Tori Griffith who does fairly well with her part. She gives the character mystery and a bit more depth in a part that has some of both elements, but only in a limited manner. The main actor that most will be looking for here is Derek Mears who has a limited number of scenes here, doing well with them, and then disappearing as fast as he showed up. The rest of the cast does ok basically, meaning that they do what they can here, there are limitations in their parts and their capacities unfortunately, showing that the film may have been better with less nudity (yes, that again) and more in-depth character development.

In terms of looks, the film here has that sunburnt, left outside look that is clearly inspired by previous post-apocalyptic films and even comic books. The film’s estimated budget found online shows about $1 million USD, which seems high to be honest. The look of the film gives a lower-end indie scifi vibe. The cinematography by Toshiyuki Imai does work well here, however. It really creates a style, mood, and vibe here that works for the story and with the settings. The look of the film works and is one of the stronger points of the film.

Lion-Girl is one of those hard to describe films that is definitely not for everyone. While it’s decently entertaining, it has limited appeal.

In a post-apocalyptic future, one young woman emerges as the only hope against the invader known as ‘ANOROC’.
