Following saving her town from a slasher killer, Winnie finds herself ignored and in a bad place, leading her to make a wish which backfires on her.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Written by Michael Kenndy and directed by Tyler MacIntyre, It\u2019s a Wonderful Knife is a holiday slasher with a twist. Early on, we find out who our final girl is, she kills the slasher, and life goes back to somewhat normal. This is not a spoiler as this is right there in the opening basically. The real story here comes after that, when she makes a wish and things majorly change for her. No spoilers on what happens from here on out. The story here is well written and well directed by two people who have some horror experience and clearly a bunch of horror knowledge. There is something here that we don’t get often, besides a good holiday horror film, and that something is why this movie is so good. The way the film is made shows that those behind it have a passion for the genre and for their work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cast here is also solid. Horror fans will quickly notice Justin Long who is always a sign that something wonky is about to happy if not something completely batty. He’s a sign that there’s something odd ahead and we love him for it. His work here is good, he’s so smarmy and annoying, playing the part of the rich landlord\/businessman\/real estate wannabe tycon really well. He’s almost slimy. In the lead of Winnie, Jane Widdop gives a solid performance, giving her character some teenage angst, some vulnerability, and a whole lot of strenght. She’s the reason to check this out in terms of performance. Playing her aunt, Katharine Isabelle shows up and reminds us that she’s one of the genre’s standing queens and we stan for more of her on screen. If anything, there is a bit of a lack of Katharine Isabelle here as she has a secondary role and will make most wish she was more central. Also requiring a mention is Jess McLeod as Bernie. She’s great here, she gives her character the exact right balance of odd and sweet. The cast here is solid all around.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The film also has a strong visual style. The cinematography by Nicholas Piatnik is fantastic, giving us images that work for their creep factor, but also look great. This is one of those films that look stunning and that is because of the cinematography work. It’s beautiful, it plays with the Holiday lights, the general look of a frozen town, the colorful aspect of the Holidays, it has a lot to work with, it could have easily become muddy or too much, but it works here. Good framing, good lighting, solid cinematography all elevate the film.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s Wonderful Knife will surely become a new Holiday horror classic, a slasher film to pop on between Black Christmas and Silent Night, Bloody Night. The film is a lot of fun, the twist comes early enough to not feel cheap, and the story works well with characters, location, twist, etc. The film makes the most of its setting and really creates a fun slasher for fans of the sub-genre.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
