There is a lot here, but the script is tight with solid direction, leading to a solid film that is easy to watch and get into. The just-over 2 hours runtime goes by swiftly and feels a lot shorter once things get going, which doesn’t really take all that long. The film is well-written, with the occasional cliche of course, and it shows that the writer-director has a talent for storytelling. Some will want to know about the science in the film, unfortunately, this reviewer is better suited to speak on the type of fabrics used for the flight suits than on any of the science at hand. As a generic space film fan, it looks good though, the science is well-written in that way that the viewer can sit back and worry about it too much (but do question it if you have the inclination to research), there is logic to it and that’s all that’re needed (unless a space engineer or astronaut watches, then it could be different).

The cast here is another strong point of the film, giving performances that keep the viewer involved and entertained. The leads played by Do Kyung-soo as the young astronaut needing saved and Sol Kyung-gu as the gent who is brought in to save him are possible the two more interesting performances here. The first for his calm that is almost shocking at time, which he peppers with emotions here and there, creating a character made up of mostly facial expressions and reactions to what is going, making the character his and really bringing the viewer into his plight, making it a certainty that the viewer will want to see them saved. The second gent, the older gent, has a more chaotic performance, going off the rails here and there, giving much more emotions and showing what past trauma can look like when someone is put in a situation much too familiar. His performance steals scenes here when he is not the central character.

The cinematography by Young-Ho Kim and the music by Jae-hak Lee work together beautifully to create atmosphere and emotion, making the film feel like more, giving it that unspoken connection. The cinematography in particular is stunning. The way the moon voyage is shown is both pretty to look at and very claustrophobic at times. It’s a hard balance to manage, but Young-Ho Kim makes it look easy.

The Moon is a solid action adventure drama, a mixed genre film that has a whole lot going and a whole lot going for it. The fact that this is a bit lesser-known of a film and cast, for North American audiences at least, helps keep the tension and wonder of “will they save the day” as there is no obvious cast member who has to make it to the end, there is no obvious out for the story, at times, you cannot guess what comes next and that is a great sign of solid screenwriting and directing. The film is a drama, not a feel-good story here, so the ending is less predictable than in a lot of other movies and may just make you cry.

Coming on Blu-ray and DVD from Well Go USA on February 27th, 2024 Following an accident, an astronaut is left alone in space without knowledge of how or if he will get home.
