Even though Cena isn’t funny either, he at least looks half awake most of the time as folks like Zac Efron and William H. Macy basically phone in this mess of a movie. There are so many sub-plots and comedic bits that are abandoned mid-way during the movie where it felt like the writers were trying to squeeze out as much from this goofy one note premise as possible.

Twenty years after creating the imaginary Ricky Stanicky, three childhood friends still use the nonexistent pal as a handy alibi for their immature behavior. When their spouses and partners get suspicious and demand to finally meet him, the guilty trio decides to hire washed-up actor Rod to bring him to life. However, when Rod takes his role of a lifetime a little too far, they begin to wish they never invented Ricky in the first place.

Logically the movie ends about hour in as the trio of slimeball protagonists invites Rod to play Ricky Stanicky, “the best friend they never had.” For reasons unbeknownst to anyone, even the writers apparently, Rod ends up being such a big hit at the party that he becomes beloved by all, thus saving the lives of the three overgrown man children we’re supposed to be rooting for. From there, the movie drags on for another fifty minutes dropping us in to this semi-dramatic premise involving Efron’s character Dean’s efforts to get a raise at his business firm, and Rod taking a job as Ricky, veering off course in to what feels like a play on “Being There.”

Then there’s this big theme about Dean being afraid to commit to having children because of his abusive childhood, as well as Jermaine Fowler’s character JT who is working on a kids’ book. All of this is just so pointless as they set up scenes that feel aimless and mean absolutely nothing to the whole resolution of the premise. Meanwhile this is promoted as a film about three friends but Jermaine Fowler gets little to nothing to do here, which is odd considering he’s the most likable and complex character in the whole shebang. Not a single person here can muster up a decent laugh. Even Macy never quite seems to know if he’s playing his character as straight or a comedic half of the time.

The whole idea of creating this scapegoat friend is funny in a smaller scale, but once you watch the characters literally pick the whole idea apart on-screen, the movie quickly deflates feels like it’s playing the audience for saps. So for twenty whole years, they blamed their fake friend for everything nasty, and people still bought it all without question? “Ricky Stanicky” is not the best from Farrelly, as it doesn’t even feel like Farrelly at the end of the day, but more like a committee trying to do their best Farrelly impression.

Now Streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
