Director Jaume Collet-Serra\u2019s horror film still remains a devious and twisted little gem that continues to be celebrated and rightfully so. It\u2019s not only one of the sharper films of its ilk, but it also wields a twist ending that is so completely out of left field, you\u2019ll be left with your jaw agape through the closing credits. \u201cOrphan\u201d is a movie punctuated by its great supporting cast but it\u2019s mainly a great showcase for newcomer Isabelle Fuhrman.<\/p>\n

Devastated by the loss of their unborn baby, Kate and John decide to adopt a child. At the orphanage, both feel drawn to a little girl named Esther, and soon the couple take their new daughter home. But when a dangerous series of events unfolds, Kate begins to suspect that there is something evil lurking behind the child’s angelic exterior.<\/p>\n

As Esther, Isabelle Fuhrman is a complex and multi layered villain prone to bouts of outbursts and devious motives that we\u2019re never really sure of, even in the very end. Fuhrman truly is the star of \u201cOrphan\u201d always hiding her wolf\u2019s fur under the sheep\u2019s wool not just from the characters, but from the audience, as well. \u201cOrphan<\/a>\u201d really does a good job of relying on expectations from this sub-genre, and then successfully undercuts the predictability by subverting them well. There are so many unique turn of events as well as a creative take on the entire idea of adoption and how grief can allow a source of evil to infiltrate the family unit.<\/p>\n

Co-stars Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard are as good as ever, playing the unwilling parents of this conniving orphan child that slowly unravels over the course of the narrative. It\u2019s a suspenseful and wildly bizarre horror film that just gets more and more admirable in its ability to offer up a great climax.<\/p>\n
