Bugs Bunny emerges, unaware of his surroundings, though a quick glimpse of the Eiffel Tower and a street sign for the Champs Elysees alerts him to his Parisian location. While strolling the city’s streets, he attracts the attention of rival restaurateurs Louis and Francois – each wants to capture and cook Bugs. Not surprisingly, Bugs quickly outwits his new foes and winds up cooking them.

As antagonists, Louis and Francois are not the most focused villains – they are much too busy fighting each other, a situation which gets enflamed as Bugs merrily taunts each one to enact painful humiliation on the other.

The funniest part of “French Rarebit” has Bugs giving Francois his recipe for “Louisiana Back-bay Bayou Bunny Bordelaise a la Antoine.” Bugs dresses the chef like a rabbit with sugar cubes for buck teeth and a grey glove on his heads minus two fingers for long ears. The food preparation is a master class in culinary violence as Francois is soaked in wine, pickled, dumped in flour and kneaded with a rolling pin before he is deposited into a large bowl of chopped vegetables. When the jealous Louis demands to know the recipe, he gets the same treatment, and the two chefs are then shoved into an oven with a dynamite-filled carrot. But not only do they survive the blast, they happily baste each other while cheering for the legendary New Orleans chef Antoine and singing “Alouette.”

This is the only Bugs Bunny short with a music score by Eugene Poddany – he was at Warner Bros. in 1951 before moving to work at other studios; Milt Franklyn is credited with orchestrations on this work.
