The story here is simple, it’s a conversation between a deaf man and a hearing man where one party is trying to get one over on the other with the interpreter stuck in the middle. This is an interesting way of putting a back and forth between client and service provider, one that someone (as a hearing person) feels very familiar. The service provider speaks fast, trying to overwhelm their client, giving tons of information, talking negatively about others, going back and forth between subjects, not giving his client time to talk or process. The film here encapsulates the frustrations of miscommunication and the anger that may come from witnessing this kind of situation go down.

The cast here is composed of 3 people, and they all do quite well here with various screen times. The lead, Kevin played by Jacob Schlotthauer, is very expressive while not uttering many noises, his hands do the talking and they do in a very expressive way. His acting here is top notch, showing so much on his facial expressions and in his he reacts as well as expresses himself. Opposite him is Doug the repairman, played by Todd Carroll, who is also quite expressive and while Schlotthauer comes off as someone who is doing his best to be good in the situation, Doug comes off as a creep and scammer, something Carroll plays really well on the screen. Joining them as the interpreter Aimee is Katrina Brianne who get very little screen time and is only partially seen for most of it. She makes the most of it all and her performance shines here due perhaps in part to the script and direction, but also in how she is while giving the viewer exactly what they need from her.

The film here opens on the best framing that it could possibly have with a super close up of the lead, one that makes him look a bit like Rufus Sewell. The cinematography, right from the opening image, is stunning. It’s just what the film needed, unflinching, not afraid to go directly onto faces or hands, making the emotions of the film and expressions of each character comes off just right. The cinematography work by William Perls is on point. The editing by Jessica Perlman works really well with the images and gives the film its pace which is also exactly on point.

Talk is a powerful really short short film that takes a subject that may be difficult for some to approach and makes it connect just right with the viewer. The writing, direction, acting, cinematography, editing, and more come together just right to create an effective short that is easy to watch.

A deaf man is having a conversation with a repairman by way of interpreter.
