Artist and Mother of Nonesuches, Tristan Risk:<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

To start, please introduce yourself:<\/strong>
\nMy name is Tristan Risk. First of her name, last of her line. Mother of Nonesuches. Lover of Dragon. Returner of Video Tapes\u2026 etc.<\/p>\n

Just kidding. I’m a Canadian artist who is an actor, writer, director and sword swallower. I have written and directed two films (Parlour Tricks and Reptile House), and been fortunate to appear in a wild variety of horror films.<\/p>\n

What is horror to you, what makes a work of art one in the horror genre?<\/strong>
\nHorror is wonderfully subjective. It gives us a chance to explore our fears in a safe context and to get really cozy with the uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

To me, a work of art in horror pleases many senses: visually interesting, effective mood and tone as well as the ability to haunt you. Look at Jaws, if you will. We know and understand so much about shark behavior but people are scared to stand in a pool if you hum the score from the film. That long lasting impact on our species as a while impresses the bejeezus out of me.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

What made you want to work in horror?<\/strong>
\nI love exploring the uncomfortable. Challenging the mundane. As a storyteller, helping us share these dark ideas is part of our collective. I loved reading scary stories as a kid, and later watching horror films. It kind of thrills me to look into the abyss and wonder what can be extracted from it.<\/p>\n

Where do you get your inspiration?<\/strong>
\nI draw horror inspirations from all around me. From people scared of bugs to people who won’t walk through a cemetery at night for fear of ghosts\u2026 I love the supernatural and the idea of otherworldly things that defy logic or science.<\/p>\n

What would you like your legacy to be in the genre (or elsewhere)?<\/strong>
\nI would love for future generations to see my work, whether it be on screen, in print or puppets and have folks go, \u2018Geez, she did everything!\u2019. I despise the idea of being pigeonholed into a single box, because as humans we are so multifaceted that being reduced to a single image is boring. And who has the time to be boring?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

What is Women in Horror Month to you and why is it still important this many years later?<\/strong>
\nWIHM is more than just a celebration of women in the genre. It’s a deliberate stab at the patriarchy. It’s a threat to the establishment. As women, our rights and autonomy are under CONSTANT attack. Showcasing the darkness in women should serve as a reminder to those that would oppress us. I wish it could just be a case of, \u2018Yay! Spooky stuff!\u2019 But we know it’s not. It’s a protest. It’s rebellion. It’s Mary Shelley schooling Byron on horror. It’s a chance to showcase feminine rage aligned with talent.<\/p>\n

Who are some of the Women in Horror who you look up to and who do you want to bring attention to in your field or others?<\/strong>
\nI want to take a hot sec to bring up three names of fellow Canadian horror creators. The first is Nadine L’Esperance aka BlueGirl, whose punk horror stories have been a staple of the indie horror scene. She creates these wild stories and I’m here for it.<\/p>\n

Second is her right hand gore gal pal Deb Graffenstyne, who creates all the practical effects for these films out of her home and brings these nightmares to life. She us a ridiculously talented artist who doesn’t get a fraction of the love that she deserves.<\/p>\n

My third is Becca Kozak who has a punk body horror feature called Sugar Rot. I read the script for the short a few years ago and it was SO GOOD! She developed it into a full length feature and it’s so weird and fun.<\/p>\n

What are you currently working on that you can tell us about?<\/strong>
\nCurrently I’m on tour in New Zealand with The Extravaganza Fair as a mermaid. My tour runs til April. I’m hoping to find some film projects, but I ticked over into my forties in 2020. The pandemic derailed a lot of film work I had lined up, and I’ve not really been able to get back into acting. So I’m hoping maybe I can find some projects for 2025 – 2026, but in the meantime I’m enjoying busking, building my puppets (The Nonesuches) and reading to children and adults with Mermaid Storytime.<\/p>\n
