The story here is engrossing and entertaining with good and bad at first which eventually turns to grey versus grey in terms of morality. There is a lot here and the film explores it well, giving the characters plenty to talk about and argue about. There is conflict after conflict, something that can happen easily when a group of people are isolated from the world with a surprise visitor thrown in for good measure.

The cast here is a what sells the film. It seems not one performance is off-key or wrong for their parts with a large group on the screen at times but only a few having lines and helping advance the story. The leads here are played by Ken Takakura as Tetsy and Tetsurô Tanba as Jakoman. This duo makes the film here, giving central and centering performances to film. It’s the two of them most folks will remember after watching the film for good reason, they are the strong actors in the cast, and they make the most of their parts. The rest of the cast works well too, but these two really sell the film, the situation, and the tension in the group. They make this film theirs and never let go.

The cinematography around the story and the cast is a beautifully stark black and white that shows an understanding for using both light and darkness to build a location or to make a scene. The work by Makoto Tsudoi (as Makoto Tsuboi) shows an understanding of images, moving and static, an understanding of lighting, and a mastery of framing. This is one beautiful, stark black and white, looking film.

Jakoman & Tetsu is a superb drama with some quality action peppered throughout, showing strong performances for the leads, and giving the viewer plenty to enjoy as they watch the tension escalate between the two men and between the fishermen. There is something strong here, something fascinating that comes from the script, through the direction, the performances, and the images beautifully well.

This new release of Jakoman & Tetsu (sometimes referred to as Jakoman to Tetsu) looks and sounds great, a staple of 88 Films releases. The extras are a bit thin in consideration of recent re-releases, but on brand for 88 Films. They clearly focus on image and sound quality over quantity of extras. Which means that here we have newly translated subtitles, an audio commentary by Tom Mes and Jasper Sharp, a new introduction, a stills gallery, a booklet with new writing, and new artwork. Once again, a lack of any archival material is what stands out the most.

Available now from 88 Films A village filled with fishermen who only live there during the fishing season finds themselves at odds when a mysterious man joins them and soon the son of the owners comes to stay at well.
