Most of them. However, Blue is the Warmest Color is not one of those films. While I appreciated the fact that it tried to gain recognition through shock value, the end result suffers as a result, with the abundance of sex scenes inadvertently overshadowing the plot and leading me to view the film as exploitative, appealing to the male fantasy of lesbianism by objectifying then through what should be a love story. The entire message is watered down through extensive and lengthy overdone periods of nudity and sexuality, distracting from the tenderness and beauty of the story it thinks it’s trying to tell.

And this is largely the fault of Abdellatif Kechiche. Putting the film through a male gaze, and compounded with rumors of terrible set behavior and sexual assault allegations later on, his direction proves to be exactly what we’re trying to avoid by being representative, onscreen and off. His idea of a film about lesbians is overly sexualized male gaze garbage instead of one of love, and he very blatantly exploited the community instead of representing it. The fact that news stories and articles about the film could only focus on the sex scenes should tell you all you need to know. That’s basically all this film is. 180 minutes of thinly veiled pornographic imagery linked together by a whisper of a plot. And while I know the film is based upon a graphic novel that was written by Jul Maroh, a member of the LGBTQ community themselves, the film adaptation embodies everything that’s wrong with films about lesbians.

What makes the film even more shameful than the poor working conditions and the exploitation, however, is the fact that it wastes stellar performances from the two leads, who almost seem like they’re trying to make a different movie than the I’ve we’re presented with. Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos act their hearts out as Emma and Adele, and outside of the overly intimate and voyeuristic sex scenes, they present us with a realistic portrayal of a young lesbian couple brought together by physical attraction and torn apart by differences of personality and life goals. What could’ve been an interesting love story about the delicateness of LGBTQ youths is instead turned into a disgusting mess of misused potential.

A beautiful color palette and unique use of visuals is lost in agonizingly long and far too graphic depictions of sex, which fails not only the actors, but the cinematographer and those behind the scenes. It’s as if everyone involved was hopeful for what this movie would be, only to be left with the sad reality of what it is.

Blue is the Warmest Color is a perfect portrait of what happens when a heterosexual male is given the chance to make a movie about the LGBTQ community and chooses to use it as a method of exploiting it for his own gains, failing not only the entire filmmaking cast and crew, but the community as a whole.

A young girl falls in love with a slightly older woman, and enters into a relationship with her that spans several years, through ups and downs and everything in between, in Blue is the Warmest Color.

[12
302,2123,3724,874
post-48109","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-drama","tag-lgbtq","tag-pride","tag-romance
["GET
