I, for one, was never a huge fan of Buffy, but I understood the hype. Still, I often felt left out by the fact that I wasn’t impressed by something so many have cited as being inspirational or otherwise a meaningful piece of their lives. Then I stumbled upon Bloody Mallory. Thanks to our beloved head editor at Cinema Crazed, Emilie Black, I was introduced to my very own Buffy the Vampire Slayer. And man is she an absolute badass.

Brought to life by Julien Magnat, a real visionary and a member of the LGBTQ community, Bloody Mallory is a raucous good time that manages to go from script to screen with an almost perfect comic book stylization. It’s over the top, humorous at times, and convoluted in all the most endearing ways that keep you guessing at what’s going to happen. Not to mention the satire of the Pope himself that’ll have anyone who isn’t a stuff shirt laughing and enjoying the ride. The story is empowering for the female lead, even if she is occasionally objectified, and all of Magnat’s characters are well formed and realized to the full extent, making them feel like living, breathing, over the top personalities instead of flat words on a page.

Embodying Mallory with panache and anything but subtlety, Olivia Bonamy is stunning, sexy, hilarious, and incredibly aspirational, ready to kick ass and take names from frame one to roll credits. She’s the type of woman I would’ve wanted to grow up to become as a child, and a part of me still wants to be her now. I guess I had better start looking into sharpening my axe for my wedding night. Valentina Vargas plays her nemesis and Queen of the Vampires, Lady Valentine, and even though there’s some obvious male gaze enjoyment in their fights, it’s a truly wonderful depiction of two women fighting with powers strong enough to take care of themselves. Everyone is perfect for their roles, too, specifically Jeffrey Ribier in a unique and representative role that made me smile with how unabashedly progressive it is without being in your face about it.

The effects are fun, albeit dated, and they’re “bad” in the way that’ll make you laugh from the heart. The score is cheesy, the cinematography is vividly colorful, and the movie as a whole is just a really enjoyable time. My chief complaint is that I wanted more time with these characters in their fantastical world of scary ghouls and demonic lovers. An hour and a half just wasn’t enough.

Bloody Mallory is entertaining from start to finish, and showcases how French cinema made strides in being progressive even before Hollywood started following suit. It’s nice seeing both female and transgender characters showcased in a refreshingly empowering light, and I would put my money on Mallory winning a fight with Buffy any day of the week.

The leader of a supernatural strike force must call upon her most powerful agents to assist in saving the Pope from his kidnappers.

[12
367,477,2123,3724
post-48182","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-foreign","tag-horror","tag-lgbtq","tag-pride
["GET
