It’s entertaining and enjoyable, but also makes a statement about something important, whether it’s politics, societal standards, or anything in between. Some films are sly and secretive about their commentaries. Snowpiercer is not. And it benefits greatly from it. Shedding the restraints of trying to be subtle and embracing a blatantly in your face perspective about classism, political leaders and societal restraints upon the poor, Snowpiercer is a loud statement that never flinches away from the dark side of life as we know it, using a fictionalized setting and story to discuss reality in a masterful way.

Largely thanks to Bong Joon Ho as both director and writer, basing his film off of the graphic novel Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob, Snowpiercer doesn’t back down from its allegories about society. With the poor punished for their indigence and the rich utilizing their power to do so, we’re shown the perfect ingredients that lead to revolt and revolution in what feels like a call to action for us, as well. Mirroring real life capitalist behaviors through social stratification and class inequality, Joon Ho knows how to weave a tale, and we’re all along for the ride. Quite literally. The train isn’t just about keeping people safely complacent within its walls; it’s also about keeping knowledge and information out.

Chris Evans is perfect as the leader of the aforementioned revolution, Chris Everett, and he brings just enough pizzazz and spice to the character to add touches of humor when necessary, as some of the scenes edge into over the top absurdity. Backed up with a diverse cast of comrades, Everett’s side of the resistance is easy to root for on their own, but it’s made even easier by the great performances of the villains, especially Ed Harris and Tilda Swinton. Both of them are delightfully and deliciously sinister, while also being perfect caricatures of people we see far too often in positions of power over the world. I also have to shout out to the wonderful John Hurt, who never once failed to amaze me in any of the roles he took throughout his career. He is dearly missed, by me and countless others.

Perhaps the best part about Snowpiercer, beyond the strong commentary it manages to make, is the special effects. While it can sometimes come off as mildly cartoonish and unrealistic, the look of the film fits the direction and story to a T. Rounded out by a fantastic score that helps bring the entire project together, Snowpiercer is a good film on several different levels, my only complaint is that I wish it would’ve gone a little harder with the ending.

Still, all in all, Snowpiercer is an unflinching look at modern society through a fictitious, yet all too possible, future, and it begs us to take a deeper look at politics, classism, and ourselves. Because life itself is a trainwreck to begin with.

The poorest of the remaining survivors of Earth’s second Ice Age plan an uprising against the leaders of the train on which they all reside, as a war between classes ignites.

[12
221,222,423,906,3756,1087
post-48377","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-comic-book","tag-comic-book-movie","tag-graphic-novel","tag-science-fiction","tag-scifi","tag-thriller
["GET
