Here the film takes on a man who is sitting by a fire and considering if life is something he still wants or if leaving this mortal coil is more for him when a woman shows up out of nowhere and makes him an offer. This set-up is done quickly as well as the story and resolution. The film is less than 10 minutes long and makes the most of it, entertaining the viewer while making them think a little. The writing is good, the direction is good, and the Angel-A influence (whether direct or not) is felt throughout, taking something similar in themes and making a new story out of them.

The cast here is two people, Cody Kostro and Alice Kremelberg, the two of them play the man and the wandered who approaches him. Both their performances work here with Kremelberg’s edging out Kostro’s by a little bit and thus making her character the more interesting of the two when the story is really about Kostro’s. Their work here is central to this short and they do deliver.

The cinematography by W. Mott Hupfel III is both lush and stark in its beautiful black and white. The look is striking and works great here, bringing to mind other films with similar themes (see above) but also being its own thing. The way W. Mott Hupfel III frames each scenes works just right for their needs, showing an understanding of the story and how to bring it to the screen in a way that pulls the viewer in. The editing works with this quite well and really lets the story breathe and develop, even at its short runtime.

The Wanderer is an interesting short film that is decently entertaining with two good performances, Kremelberg stealing her scenes throughout. The themes are of interest to many and make the whole film. The ending isn’t quite what is expected, so kudos for going there. Overall, the effect here is one that gets the viewer in a deep manner but could definitely use a longer runtime, perhaps even as a feature where the Wanderer is given more time to spend with the Man and perhaps both could be given more time to dig into the themes and their ramifications. Of course, the short runtime allows the viewer to make up their own minds a bit more.

A stranger offers man something that is hard to refuse.
