We all have our flaws and problems. Some movies remind you of those dysfunctions, while others make you thankful that maybe your family isn’t quite so bad. The Sparrow in the Chimney is somehow both. By painting a portrait of a family that’s never shy about vocalizing their issues with one another, the film is weirdly relatable and cathartic, and feels like a lesson in how open communication can be better for the family dynamic than attempts at cordiality. The masks come down fast, with dirty laundry, and a lot of other messy stuff, spilling out and hitting the fan in a well paced study of the family dynamic that finally feels truthful in every way possible.

Written and directed in unflinchingly raw and bold style by Ramon Zücher, The Sparrow in the Chimney is the third installment in his “animal trilogy,” but it works very well as a standalone film, too. It’s taut, tense, and realistic in ways that aren’t often depicted in film with such a strong voice, and by touching on shades of inherited mental illness, unresolved traumas, and the pain that comes from having a dysfunctional family, the film is a window into the often times painful reality that’s a bit too close to home for a lot of us. But it’s in that closeness that Sparrow truly excels as a unique viewpoint, because so few are willing to delve into what really goes on inside a problematic family behind closed doors.

And while the script is fantastic, it’s only as good as the actors make it, and the actors here are superb beyond words. Maren Eggert’s Karen and Britta Hammelstein’s Jule are perfectly dichotomized and imbalanced in all the right ways, giving the characters a tangible and palpable tension that can really be found in many families around the world. Backed up by an incredible supporting cast, especially thanks to Lea Zoe Voss, Andreas Döhler, and Ilja Bultmann, everyone does a fantastic job with their roles, bringing this family to life with perfectly imperfect traits, flaws, and a whole lot of need for therapy. Everyone has depth, and it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll find someone in this family with whom you identify, both for yourself and your own family members.

Beyond the cast and fabulous script, the film looks beautiful, too. The cinematography by Alex Hasskerl is gorgeous, creating a warmly inviting color palette that fools you into the belief that this could be a normal family. Which, in a weird way, it is. Rounded out by a score that Balz Bachmann utilizes to drive the points of the film home with a congruent and unobtrusively emotional composition, the entire film comes together just right and makes for a distinctly unpleasant and raw viewing experience that you won’t soon forget.

The Sparrow in the Chimney is a moving portrait of family with a whole lot to say, and it certainly doesn’t hesitate to say it. It also manages to show just how alike we all are, all over the world.

A simple birthday get-together ignites long buried tensions and threatens to destroy the entire family as reality shatters and old wounds are ripped open.

[12
302,367
post-48466","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-drama","tag-foreign
["GET
