Then there’s Joe Finds Grace, which is quite possibly the best indie film that hardly anyone has ever seen. It’s quirky, humorous, endearing, heartfelt, and unlike most anything else out there in a very good way. Unique and touching, Joe Finds Grace is one of those films that’ll have you feeling like you’ve discovered something truly phenomenal that you absolutely must share with the world. And that’s exactly what I’m doing. While a film that transcends genres as much as this one does can often feel tonally awkward as the styles clash, Joe Finds Grace manages to skirt the line between drama, fantasy, comedy, animation, and absurdity, while still having a big ol’ beating heart.

Intimately unique and light-heartedly fun without ever forgetting how to resonate, Anthony Harrison is a jack of all trades, and a master of all of them. Writing, directing, editing, animating, and playing the lead, Harrison does a ton of the legwork himself, and in this case, it pays off extraordinarily well. While some filmmakers playing too many roles can spell disaster in the wrong hands, it can also be indicative of a film that never strays away from a magnificent initial vision, and that’s definitely what we get here. Every inch of this film feels constructed with love and care for not only the story, but the characters themselves, and I cannot imagine this film in anyone else’s hands.

Playing the lead character in this film is no easy feat, either, yet Harrison pulls it off with nuance and grace. Yes, that’s an awful pun. The rest of the characters are fantastic, too, with all of them being well rounded and fully developed. Ellie Harvie is wonderfully thought out as Eva, Johannah Newmarch is superb and fantastic as Mariam, and C Ernst Harth is unique and endearing as ever as Horst Himmelferger. And if that character name doesn’t make you giggle every time you hear it, then you have no soul. These characters bring a strikingly unique and distinct world to life through every way possible, and you’ll definitely find yourself extraordinarily attached to Joe before the credits start rolling.

With perfectly exaggerated and cartoonish makeup effects from Duncan Graham and Doug Morrow, Joe feels as much like a human as he does a caricature, which perfectly encapsulates the feeling of the entire film. Not to mention the absolutely wonderful score from Kevin MacLeod, which crafts a whole other layer of immersion, and the cinematography by Jim Wallace, which is spectacularly captured even in black and white. Somehow, it all works together perfectly, creating a film that I wish more people knew existed.

Like finding a hidden treasure, Joe Finds Grace is a heartwarming film that touches on heavy subject matter with tenderness and love, and works in so many ways, it’ll leave you wondering how it’s gone unnoticed. Criminally underrated doesn’t even begin to cover it.

A disfigured and developmentally disabled man embarks on a journey of love, loss, and everything in between, as he attempts to find his long lost baby sister, meeting plenty of eccentric people along the way.

[12
71,99,219,302,703
post-48472","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-adventure","tag-animation","tag-comedy","tag-drama","tag-mystery
["GET
