This is more in-your-face brutality than left-to-the-imagination brutality as opposed to its clear inspiration The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and even The Hills Have Eyes. The violence here is part of the story in full, it shows up full force, and it does not shy away from anything. As some might have guess, a mild content warning needs to be given here and while it would be a spoiler for any other film this is a Marcel Walz films so here goes: There is male genitalia getting destroyed on screen in the most creative (?) way so far from the director who has done so in the majority of his films. And this is laid at the feet of the director as writer Joe Knetter has been paired up with him multiple times in recent years, but the pattern has been establishing itself long before these two started working together (rewatch Blood Feast for an early case if you are curious). Here, the story is very much meant to be brutally violent, filled with blood and gore, and a decent chunk of nudity (both male and female). There is something here that shows these folks know what they are doing, they know how to bring the kills, but the fear levels are fairly low and the maiming becomes a bit routine for those who have followed Knetter and Walz’ careers.

The cast here is pretty much as expected, beautiful people about to meet their horrible demises. The cast is led by Adriane McLean who is fantastic in the part of Roxy, giving the film a non-violent person to lean on for the majority of the runtime. She plays the more down-to-earth type with good morals and a bit of a conscience when it comes to the world around here. McLean does this role justice and brings a little something extra that makes her a solid lead that one will want to watch until the end. In the other juicy part that we see from the start is Sarah French as Sunshine, a true 1970s lady who makes her mark her own way. Leading the family of bad guys is Dazelle Yvette as Mama Birdy who gives a baddie performance that has some really good moments and a few flat ones sadly. The rest of the cast is mostly generic bad guys and clearly marked victims who you can tell who is going to die from the second they show up on screen.

The look of the film here is pretty on point with solid costume choices, decor, and even vehicles fitting quite well in the mid-1970s. The set decor, costume design, and production design departments did fantastic work here. Working with all of this and highlighting it is the cinematography by Marcus Friedlander that looks fantastic. The work here captures the essence of a 1970s slasher, of the sun-soaked desert, and works great with the story. The look of the film here is stronger than the way the story is brought into life at times, which makes it an interesting what for a few scenes. While the story works, the visuals steal the show more than once.

Brute 1976 is a film that is clearly made by fans of back road, 1970s horror with a modern taste for the red stuff and a budget many of the films it is inspired by could never have had. Of course, modern technology also helps here while staying hidden. Brute 1976 is a violent mix of desert fiends, fashion folks, and what happens when people are left alone outside of society for too long.

A photoshoot group ends up in the desert to try and find the perfect shot.
