I really do. And I want to love the Nobody films as a result. And part of me really does live them. They’re fun, entertaining, and it’s got plenty of Bob doing some pretty kick-ass stuff. But there’s something missing that I just can’t quite put my finger on, and what was simmering under the surface in the first film only gets worse with this sequel. There’s a foundational issue going on, and rather than attempt to amend that problem with this installment, we’re instead given more of the same style stuff from the first film without any deeper substance or gains. And while it still works, and makes for a good time spent watching it, it’s unfortunately structured in a way that’s so forgettable and flat that it’s only truly enjoyable if you have a pre-existing adoration for Odenkirk himself.

The film also suffers from a frenetic and over the top directorial style from Timo Tjahjanto that can get pretty dizzying at times. The shakiness of the camera and the way scenes are shot can make you feel like you’re missing out on some of the action taking place, with weirdly timed cutaways and unsteady angles that deprive us of the best bloody results of Odenkirk’s badassery. Then there’s the issues with the film that come from a script standpoint, even though I expected better from Derek Kolstad. He and Aaron Rabin make little to no effort to build upon the world they created with the first film, instead opting for a “less is more” approach that doesn’t quite give us enough to really go on. We want more than we’re getting, and where John Wick gave us enough bones to chew on with each subsequent installment, Nobody 2 introduces absolutely no further information into the story of these characters, and is in fact so detached from the established story of the first film that it winds up leaving them all feeling rather flat and uninspired.

It’s a shame that such a shoddy script is brought to life through such stellar performances from most of the film’s heavy hitters, too. Odenkirk acts his heart out, and you can’t help but feel endeared to his character of Hutch Mansell, even if we don’t know enough about him to truly feel like we know him. He’s a great character, being held back by scripts that don’t seem to know what to do with him. The same can be said about Connie Nielsen, who is fantastic, albeit underdeveloped, and the glimpses we get into how she married Hutch and why she’s so capable of sharpshooting are so limited that it almost feels like a criminal offense. RZA and Christopher Lloyd return, as well, with their parts here equally as subdued and unimpactful as the first outing, but the film really suffers from its newcomers. Colin Hanks is miscast, dropping an overabundance of F-bombs while sporting a Forrest Gump haircut that looks like he’s just trying way too hard for… something. And Sharon Stone is shamefully unimportant, with her performance giving absolutely nothing noteworthy to a character who is already an uninspired and flat run of the mill villain. Oh, and I suppose they thought no one would notice that Daniel Bernhardt is back, playing a different character than he did in the first film. I guess that was his twin brother who died in the infamous bus scene…

One thing that always shines in these films is the choreography, and I would expect nothing less from a film with David Leitch’s name attached. Stunts and effects are also wonderful, even if it feels like we’re missing out on the best parts more than once. Dominic Lewis’ score is electrifying and well suited, too, and Callan Green’s cinematography is gorgeous, with the perfect use of wild color palettes that makes it really pretty to look at, despite the fact that there’s very little worth actually seeing.

Nobody 2 is a film I really wanted to like, but there’s just not enough substance here to make it worth the effort to do so. I wish someone would give us a real vehicle for a Hutch Mansell story. He could be the comedic John Wick if it was done properly. Alas, what we get is a bare bones actioner that winds up being as fun as it is forgettable.

The “average nobody” of the first film returns for another action packed outing, this time with all hell breaking loose as he tries to take his family on a much needed vacation.

[12
58,302,1087
post-49260","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-action","tag-drama","tag-thriller
["GET
