Time travel in film, and media in general, is usually grandiose and extravagant. There’s time machines, multiple jumps to different eras, a TARDIS. Not many take the more subdued approach, and yet that’s what makes Somewhere in Time so very special. It’s romantic, touching, and absolutely heartbreaking, and while it takes a big suspension of disbelief for the plot to work, and there are occasional moments of cheesiness that are actually more endearing than they are corny, the film is very unique, especially for its time. Set in the still absolutely gorgeous and stunning Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan, a setting that’s as much of a character in the film as the humans, Somewhere in Time is somewhat overlooked in the history of film, and that’s a crime against humanity.<\/p>\n

Adapting the film from his book Bid Time Return, Richard Matheson weaves an epic tale of grand proportions through the most miniscule of stories; one of a love that spans time and space. With sweeping visuals and beautiful tender framing, Jeannot Szwarc brings those words to life, painting the most gorgeous of portraits that’ll stick with you for decades to come. It’s poignant, timeless, and the ending will leave you needing tissues in a way that will scar you for life in exactly the right way.<\/p>\n

But we can’t talk about Somewhere in Time without mentioning how much credit goes to Christopher Reeve. His performance is reserved and introverted as opposed to his usually charismatic delivery, leaning more Clark Kent than Superman this time around, and he becomes instantly likeable and relatable as our lovestruck protagonist. Played in conjunction with Jane Seymour, the stunning love interest who wears her charms and her pains on her face in bold display, the love story, and the tension between the two, is so palpable and real, you’ll be googling if they dated in real life. Spoiler alert; they did. And it’s obvious as to why. Keeping them apart, and playing the main antagonists aside from time itself, is Christopher Plummer in quite the stark contrast to his turn in The Sound of Music. Establishing himself as villainous and downright despicable, you’ll hate the man as much as you love him after this film.<\/p>\n

Effects are very much a time capsule, capturing the 80s aesthetic that has its own level of charm, even though it looks a bit dated today. But the real winner here is that score, which will have any fan of the film in tears within the first few notes. Cinematography is pretty to look at, too, and as I mentioned before, that setting is really something to behold. I’ve been there. And yes, it’s as amazing in person as it is in the film.<\/p>\n

While it can sometimes feel aged, and a few moments might just make you cringe with how cornball they are, it’s hard to watch Somewhere in Time and walk away unscathed. If you want your heart ripped out, stomped on, and thrown into a blender, this one will do it for you, and happily so.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
