Few films have the type of universal appeal that’s needed to stay relevant decades out from release without continuous franchise installments to refresh interest. Only the truly great can rise above the test of time and still be talked about over 40 years later. And one of those films is The Thing. While its had a few spinoffs and other installments, and it is itself a remake, there’s something about The Thing that doesn’t feel like a franchise, because none of those other works of film can come anywhere near its greatness. If you ask me, it’s one of the most close to perfect films ever made, from the performances, to the story, to everything in between, and it’s thanks to that perfection that it still rattles us to our very cores to this day. Taking science fiction and telling us exactly why we shouldn’t screw around with things better left frozen, The Thing is full of the most intense dread and subtle terror I’ve ever seen committed to film.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Starting out its life as a relative box office bomb (thanks, E.T. The Extraterrestrial), The Thing quickly gained critical acclaim and developed a cult following that helped cement its status as another staple in the horror history of John Carpenter. Drawn from the 1938 novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell, Bill Lancaster\u2019s script is an incredible menagerie of paranoia, distrust, and a deep rooted fear we all have; isolation. Because the scariest aspect of The Thing isn’t the alien lifeform itself, it’s the inability to trust your own eyes, your own ears, or your own friends. The fact that it can take the shape of anyone or anything it wants helps to create more fear and dread than any actual creature reveal. Although that’s not to say the creature itself isn’t jaw droppingly terrifying. Because it is.<\/p>\n

I don’t know if it was this movie that made him one of my favorite actors, or if it was him being one of my favorite actors that made me love this movie, (because yes, I saw The Thing really frigging young. My mom knew I loved movies.) but Kurt Russell is by far one of the most talented and versatile actors in Hollywood, and his performance in The Thing is no exception. R. J. MacReady is already a fantastic character from print and page, but Russell’s interpretation of the character gives him subtle nuance and personality that makes him instantly likeable. Throw in Keith David, A. Wilford Brimley, Charles Hallahan, and a whole cast of characters who could be \u201cthe thing\u201d at any moment, and you’ve got a hell of a setup for a fantastic story that manages to pay off big-time.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of The Thing, however, is Rob Bottin\u2019s fantastic practical effects. His work here is nothing short of spectacular, and is a large reason behind the film\u2019s near perfection. From the chest compression scene (which traumatized me and also excited me to the ways of movie magic) to the creature design itself, The Thing has some of the most well done and noteworthy practical effects ever created. Combine that with the simplistic and yet perfectly sinister two note score that rivals Jaws in iconicism and you’ve got a boiler pot ready to burst with intensity that hasn’t been rivaled before or since.<\/p>\n

Despite being four decades since it released, The Thing still holds up as not only a fantastic science fiction film, but a truly phenomenal film overall. And one of its most iconic lines is still relevant to this day. Nobody trusts anybody now, and we’re all very tired.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
