Sometimes all you need is a good concept and a vision. And that’s exactly what Primer has. While the trailers may turn you off from the film, and the lack of budget is sometimes hard to ignore, Primer is a movie that takes what it has and runs with it, and the effort that went into it alone is commendable. It’s mind bending, complex, weirdly educational, and entirely unique, and above all else, it’s criminally underrated and underseen. Made for only $7,000, Primer is a fantastic feat of talent, and it deserves all kinds of praise.

Especially because of Shane Carruth. The film was written, directed, produced, edited and scored by him, plus he plays the lead character, and it’s his feature debut. With a strong vision, and interesting premise, and all kinds of love felt in every aspect of the film, it’s an inspiration to any and all filmmakers everywhere that if there’s a will, there’s a way. You can feel his undying dedication to the craft through the film, and even if there are moments where the budgetary constraints are visible, they’re easy to overlook when you realize just how hard Carruth worked to bring this project to life. Best of all, you can tell it stayed true to his vision, from beginning to end, with no outside input to steer him away from executing exactly what he wanted. And there’s something applause worthy about that.

His performance is phenomenal, as well, embodying this highly intelligent and morally reprehensible character with ease. You truly believe he’s smart enough to create a time traveling device by accident, and as tensions mount, it’s never fully clear which character is going to go too far until it’s too late. Bookended by David Sullivan, the cast is small, and intentionally so, creating an incredibly intimate bond with these two as you watch their relationship deteriorate with the blessing, and curse, that is power. The friendship between them feels real, and it’s painful to watch as they fall apart, with the age old duality of morality and goodness coming into play in ways that are striking, surprising, and interesting enough to keep you watching until the very end, just to find out how the hell it’s all going to wrap up.

While there’s not much in the way of effects, aside from a few inserts here and there, the props are well designed, particularly the time travel machine, and sets are simple but effective. It’s stark and sterile in visuals and cinematography, too, giving the film a weirdly scientific persona that fits perfectly. You’ve got to give Carruth credit; he did some really amazing legwork and it certainly paid off.

While it can definitely come off as cheap and low budget from time to time, there’s no denying that Primer is unique and stylishly executed, with a strong vision that drives it from start to finish.

When two scientists accidentally invent a time machine, they find themselves drawn to use it, inadvertently destroying their lives, relationships, and even the world itself.

[12
302,1458,1087,1098
post-49457","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-drama","tag-sci-fi","tag-thriller","tag-time-travel
["GET
