Everything new is a spin on something old, either blatantly or subtly, with remakes, sequels, reimaginings, and spinoffs running rampant. That’s why when something truly unlike anything else comes along, it deserves acknowledgement and praise. One such film is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Making bold statements about the simpler things in life through a high concept storyline about a fictional memory erasing process, the film takes on heavy subject matter like mental health, grief, relationships, and the very things that make us human. It’s raw, heartbreaking, and somehow hopeful in spite of it all, and though some have tried to replicate it in the years since, Eternal Sunshine is one of those lightning in a bottle films that simply cannot be recaptured.

From the collective minds of Charlie Kaufman, Michel Gondry, and Pierre Bismuth, the concept itself is so unique on its own that it stands out, but it’s the fact that they used such a highly unique idea as a vehicle for a story about love that makes Eternal Sunshine so memorable. No pun intended. With Kaufman bringing his trademark eccentricity to the screenplay, and with Gondry behind the camera adding his own fantastical lens to the project, every facet of the film is spectacularly distinct with just enough touches of quirkiness that the darkness of the subject matter never overwhelms the story in a depressing way. Still, you’ll probably cry anyway. I certainly do every time I watch it. It’s an ageless story that’s relatable for most anyone who watches it, because we’ve all experienced painful memories and sadness that we might prefer to have erased.

A big part of what makes Eternal Sunshine work so well, though, boils down to the performances. With Jim Carrey in an against type role that’s as subtle as it is delicate, you can see the agony of his life through his expressions and subdued voice in a way that makes you forget that this is the same guy who was so loudly hilarious in his previous comedy films. His introverted and quiet Joel is starkly contrasted by Kate Winslet’s phenomenal Clementine, who is so vibrant and colorful, literally and figuratively, it’s like watching a real life yin and yang play out in a backwards timeline. But while these two characters, as well as Elijah Wood’s creepy twerp Patrick, tend to get the most attention, there’s also an incredible subplot portrayed by Kristen Dunst and the late Tom Wilkinson. Despite their massive age difference, which is acknowledged in the film, they have striking chemistry, and their story is almost equally as heartbreaking and moving as Joel and Clementine. Add Mark Ruffalo into the mix as the rather innocent bystander, and the cast is about as perfect as you can get. Everyone is realistic, full of depth, and will stick with you long after the credits have rolled. Except for Patrick. Baby boy.

Utilizing absolutely flawless practical effects that create dizzying sequences off perspective based size differences, and CGI that’s just unobtrusive enough to be completely mind bending, Eternal Sunshine excels in the quiet moments just as much as it does when it’s illustrating the interior of an artistic mind. That’s without even mentioning how fantastic the soundtrack is, with songs from Beck, Pink Floyd, and ELO, and an absolutely incredible score that captures the feeling of a fractured mind wrought with grief and the duality of the two main characters. There’s a reason I have the theme from this film on a four hour loop on my playlist.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an entirely distinct and unique film that manages to perfectly dance between its high concept idea and low concept subject matter in a way that’ll have you feeling every end of the emotional spectrum. It’s one of my top 3 favorite films of all time.

A heartbroken man decides to utilize a new service to erase his memories of his tumultuous relationship with his former girlfriend, inadvertently losing pieces of himself along the way as she disappears from his mind.

[12
302,1458,906
post-49461","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-drama","tag-sci-fi","tag-science-fiction
["GET
