Written by Jake Fallon and directed by Nick Craven, this short film shows an aspect of auditioning that may not be as obvious for the movie-watching public\u00a0where actors need to prove themselves to sometimes hostile folks. Here the writing and direction seem to come from a place where the folks behind the camera have the experience of what is happening in front of it. The writing feels personal while a bit cold which seems to be\u00a0just right\u00a0for the situation,\u00a0an actress\u00a0in a cold white room giving a performance\u00a0to be judged\u00a0immediately. The direction works well with the writing of course and it adds to the feeling of the story, bringing forth the conflict of wanting a part but also not wanting to let people push beyond what is acceptable.\u00a0The work here shows that the folks creating this short film have lived experience and are ready to pull back the curtain on some aspects of auditioning.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cast here is fairly limited in number, but everyone feels like they are naturally doing this, like it is something they\u2019ve done a bunch of times, which may be indeed the reality for many of them as they are actors and auditions are a way of life in their industry. Lead actress Nancy Kimball plays the part of Jordyn with determination and a passion that may come off a bit harsh on screen but harsh is definitely what the part needed here. Her work sets the tone when the other three in the room try to usurp it and make her uncomfortable. While the men in the room have their place and made for an almost perfect audition watching trio of the direction, a reader, and a cameraman, their presence is almost negative in some of the scenes, especially that of the director. Kimball holds her own here and makes the film all about her even in scenes where others are very much there with her. Raz Ayer as Emir comes off straight up disagreeable which is likely the point and a point he makes quite well. Jake Fallon and Dan Bauer come of a bit friendly but mostly disingenuous as their parts call for. We see a few more faces in this short, but none of them have any real line and they come off as part of the d\u00e9cor.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cinematography by Emily\u00a0Kordovich\u00a0comes off cold as it needs to be, giving the audience room a confrontational mood with its all-white walls and\u00a0its almost clinical look. The camera work here works great as it goes back and forth between the view from Jordyn onto the three men she is auditioning for and a more\u00a0up-close\u00a0view of her and her action. The camera work here is calculated and planned, almost clinical and cold, like a lot of auditions seem to be.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Crying on Command is an effective short film that gives a view on\u00a0the auditioning process in its raw and cold form, one format that many actors have seen in their careers but one that is not necessarily the norm. The film makes\u00a0great use\u00a0of its cast and location to really push the cold and uncaring feeling, giving lead Nancy Kimball something to work with that she makes the most of.
