Written by Gordon Chan and Hing-Ka Chan from a novel by Kuang Ni (aka Wisely) and directed by Ngai Choi Lam, The Cat is a batshit insane film somewhere between Evil Deal and some of the most insane science-fiction out there. There is a ton going on here and the tone of the film comes off like a precursor for films such as Meatball Machine and Tokyo Gore Police where things are insane, the story mostly makes sense, but more of the audience\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0watching for the plot. The way the story develop from the start is\u00a0fairly surprising\u00a0and gives the viewer\u00a0a good idea\u00a0of what they are getting into from the very\u00a0start.\u00a0The\u00a0story is entertaining and the way the direction brings it to the screen is a lot of fun.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cast here is led by\u00a0Waise\u00a0Lee as Wei Si Li (aka Wisely, refer novel author above)\u00a0who finds himself dealing a\u00a0seemingly crazed\u00a0cat and later the cat\u2019s human or\u00a0maybe not\u00a0human Princess played by Gloria Yip. Lee does decent work here with the part at hand, making it a fun part to watch and making sure\u00a0his character doesn\u2019t completely disappear in scenes shared with Princess as Yip really makes the most of her part, making Princess the center of attention, stealing scenes, and shining throughout.\u00a0She\u2019s\u00a0adorable, charismatic, and a bit unhinged, a perfect combo for this story and this film. The two of them make for an entertaining pair of leads and really help make the film. The cat at the center of everything has scenes where real cats were used and kudos to the trainers and wranglers for getting the cats to do anything at all, even when that thing\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0fully fit the scenes. The cat is the titular character and thus he shall shine.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The special effects here are fabulous, in a 1980s sort of way. The practical effects look quite low\u00a0budget,\u00a0but they work and they help entertain, showing that practical often wins over computer generated effects. Speaking of the latter, what this film has of them is\u00a0cheesily\u00a0dated and\u00a0just right\u00a0for the mood here. The\u00a0computer-generated\u00a0effects and other visual effects are particularly old looking and\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0fantastic, hitting that nostalgic mood\u00a0just right.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Cat is a nutty film that is a bunch of fun\u00a0with some serious nonsense of the best kind going on\u00a0pretty much throughout.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0one of those films that gets put on as a curiosity and ends up getting 100% of the attention from everyone near the television\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0been put on.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0fun,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0silly,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0insane,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0perfectly imperfect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This new release of The Cat from 88 Films is fantastic with a new packaging that is gorgeous and fun, new art from Sean Longmore that\u00a0looks great, and a booklet that collectors will want. The new 2K restoration looks\u00a0really solid\u00a0and the audio works\u00a0just right\u00a0with it. The newly translated English sub-titles are easy to follow. In terms of extras on the disc, the new\u00a0udio\u00a0commentary by Frank\u00a0Djeng\u00a0is a good listen, and the new interview with writer Gordon Chan is\u00a0a must\u00a0for fans. A few more items are included here such as an image gallery. The treatment given to The Cat is likely more than the film ever deserves but it shows how much love the film gets from\u00a0just about anyone\u00a0who checks it out.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
