Based on the Todd McFarlane comics, from a screen story by Alan B. McElroy and Mark A.Z.\u00a0Dipp\u00e9, with McElroy credited with the screenplay, and directed by\u00a0Dipp\u00e9, Spawn is an early comic book adaptation that went for the dark side of things, taking a page from The Vrow and a chapter from more action-centric films like Street Fighter. There is some great\u00a0stuff in\u00a0here and some\u00a0not-so-great\u00a0stuff, showing that sometimes,\u00a0there is a reason something is not done often or at all. To be honest, the good and the bad here come together to create a film that is purely late 1990s fun,\u00a0nonsense\u00a0and all. The story here is simple enough, man dies, goes to Hell, is spat back out, given a second chance, figures out how to be a better hero, and saved the day. Ok,\u00a0maybe not\u00a0all that simple, but it works\u00a0here\u00a0and there\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0too much head-scratching going\u00a0on,\u00a0so\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0enjoyable. Of course, suspension of disbelief is\u00a0a big thing\u00a0for this film, so for those unfamiliar, be ready to watch some\u00a0things that\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0all make sense, but\u00a0all work out in the end. The writing here is a bit messy in\u00a0spots;\u00a0the direction shows that there\u00a0is\u00a0some flare and talent, but something is missing.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0a good movie,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a fun movie, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0also a bit of a mess.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cast here makes the most of it all and turns this film into their own playground. From Michael Jai White as Spawn, to John Leguizamo as Clown, to Melinda Clarke,\u00a0Martin Sheen, to Miko Hughes,\u00a0it seems everyone\u00a0in this is a familiar face and here to make this film the most fun film they can. Michael Jai White of course carries\u00a0the majority of\u00a0the\u00a0film,\u00a0and he does do in\u00a0a great way,\u00a0making Spawn his own within the confines and limitations of the suit, showing a solid physical performance with a vocal performance that does a lot of the heavy lifting in some scenes.\u00a0John Leguizamo disappears in his prosthetics-heavy costume as well, making\u00a0Clown\u00a0something\u00a0that looks and feels right out of a comic book, making him a larger-than-life villain and a solid counterpart to Spawn. The rest of the cast looks to be having fun, making their way through the film and its insanity while getting to fight, run, and\u00a0do comic book\u00a0adaptation\u00a0things. There is a\u00a0pretty wide\u00a0cast list\u00a0here,\u00a0and everyone seems to be hellbent on delivering the best performance they can for the material.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cinematography by Guillermo Navarro\u00a0works great for the story, making the most of the light and the dark, playing with the light sources available, rain, wet surfaces, and more. The work here is calculated and perfect for the comic book adaptation style this film has. Working within these images to make the\u00a0film look as good as it can, the special effects and animatronics give the film charm and make it look so good. The\u00a0work here is stunning and seeing the names Howard Berger, Robert Kurtzman, and Greg\u00a0Nicotero\u00a0is not a surprise to anyone who knows their work.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Spawn is a comic book adaptation that came\u00a0early on in the\u00a0landscape of it all, a year before Blade, 3 years after The Crow.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0one that has left its mark with the folks who have\u00a0love\u00a0it from the start and is starting to get more fans as the nostalgia crowd gets into it as well. This new release is a solid way\u00a0to discover or rediscover the film as it includes both the theatrical and director\u2019s cut of the film and a ton of extras. The new restoration here looks fantastic on Blu-ray with solid sound quality. The extras are so plentiful that\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0hard to\u00a0pick favorites. However, a few of these extras come up above the rest. The commentary with McFarlane and\u00a0Dipp\u00e9\u00a0is a highlight here, so are the new interviews with Michael Jai White, Melinda Clarke and D.B. Sweeney,\u00a0Howard Berger and Greg\u00a0Nicotero, and the archival features.
