Earlier this month I had the pleasure of seeing Wes Craven’s classics, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, on the big screen. This was perfect prep viewing for Craven’s final entry for the month… Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. This entry followed Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare, and avoided conflicting with the franchise lore by taking place in the real world.

Heather Langenkamp has stepped away from her role as Nancy from A Nightmare on Elm Street, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors, to raise her son Dylan in a nurturing environment. This proves harder than expected, with her husband’s busy schedule as a special effects artist, frequent earthquakes that rock their upscale home, and disturbing phone calls from a seemingly deranged fan that enjoys tormenting her. The real world setting for New Nightmare provides Nancy with a support group that includes the likes of Wes Craven and Robert Englund themselves. Both of whom aim to guide Nancy through her troubling times as an increasingly paranoid mother.

When Heather starts having nightmares and discovering parallels in her real life that reflect upon them, she starts to lose focus on what’s real and what isn’t. To make things even more sporadic, she receives an offer from New Line Cinema for a new Freddy film that Wes has been writing in private. Wes’ fresh script is based on recent nightmares he’s been having, in which a mysterious evil entity is trying to enter their world in the form of Freddy Krueger. To make things more worrying, events Heather has experienced all appear to be a part of his growing narrative. When her son Dylan begins to behave erratically, she seeks help only to realize that Wes’ nightmares might be insight into something sinister that has latched on to her and her child. The only way to stop it? Take on the role of Nancy and meet the entity head on.

Other familiar franchise faces include the likes of John Saxon, who plays himself after portraying Nancy’s father, Lt. Donald Thompson. Horror mainstay, Lin Shaye, returns from her role as a nameless teacher from the first Nightmare film, this time playing a nurse. Had the film been made after her run in the Insidious franchise, it’s likely that she would have played a version of herself. Unfortunately, there’s no appearance from the likes of Johnny Depp, who’s last appearance in the franchise was in the expected finale, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare.

Wes Craven’s New Nightmare was written and directed by Wes himself, allowing him to showcase a version of Freddy Krueger that was more in line with his original vision. This take was intended to be more menacing than humorous. While there are a few laugh-inducing lines from Englund, his demonic presence removes any comfort that comedy could provide. The danger that Heather and her son face feels authentic while they’re plagued with life threatening dreams and increasingly hostile phone calls. The calls themselves feel like a precursor to the calls that would plague the victims in Scream, which Wes would release just two years after New Nightmare. The meta setting he created for Freddy blatantly influenced his approach to horror within a world adjacent to our very own, where horror films are horror films and threats feel real.

New Nightmare may have put life into the pending Scream franchise, but it performed worse than any of the Elm Street movies that had come before it. However, Craven was very happy with the result… Turning Freddy into more than just a joke factory. I personally rate New Nightmare higher on the list of Nightmare films than most and recommend watching it as a double feature with the original Elm Street outing. It’s a great way to properly experience Craven’s approach to Krueger, and you get to see Robert Englund play three roles… Freddy, Himself, and a paranormal entity that apparently loves horror films. New Nightmare offers an original story, a second outing with a phenomenal cast, and a final act that satisfies fans each and every time. Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and the entire Nightmare on Elm Street franchise are available on digital, and a recently released 4K box set. Be sure to throw it into your horror rotation this holiday season.

Heather Langenkamp has to reprise her Nightmare on Elm Street role in order to save her son from an evil entity that has manifested in the real world as a demonic take on Freddy Krueger.

[7,12
477,3872,1087
post-50197","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-halloween-horror-month","category-movie-reviews","tag-horror","tag-meta-horror","tag-thriller
["GET
