When an ambitious barber’s dreams of working for the prince are about to come to fruition, the royal family’s seven eggs are stolen, and his worth to the kingdom will go far beyond his ability to style their hair.<\/p>\n

As I started to watch Out of the Nest, I mistakenly assumed I was about to see another attempt at a ‘Kung Fu Panda’ narrative. Instead of a panda, we meet Arthur the Goat. Instead of peddling noodles, he’s delivering pastries. Instead of having a tortoise as a master, Arthur has Master Toad. At first, the only thing I had to alter my expectations was Arthur’s goal… To become a master barber. He only delivers food as a side gig, and he spends most of his efforts studying to cut hair fit for royalty. This would be ideal for Arthur, as the prince will be needing a new haircut for a royal coronation. However, when the royal eggs are stolen and work their way into Arthur’s care, he must put aside his stylistic ambition to protect the kingdom’s most important offspring. What unfurls isn’t a bootleg ‘Kung-Fu Panda’. What we get is something more akin to ‘Adventures in Babysitting’ meets ‘The Golden Child’.<\/p>\n

Out of the Box comes from Gillian Berrow and Arturo A. Hernandez, which means the project was in good hands. This may have been Berrow and Hernandez’s first writer credits on a feature length film, but it was far from their first experience in the world of family friendly animation. Berrow had been writing episodes and specials for My Little Pony since 2017, and Hernandez has an impressive history with Disney’s animation department that include such titles as Beauty and the Beast, Hercules, and Atlantis: The Lost Empire. The writing duo strike the perfect balance of whimsical lore and laugh-worthy slapstick comedy, putting Arthur on an adventure worthy of the whole family. It never slips into being annoying, like too many kid films often do. It doesn’t take itself too seriously though, allowing itself to be silly yet captivating.<\/p>\n

Capturing the theme of Asian fantasy requires more than just a creative narrative. A lot of the heavy lifting comes from the film’s soundtrack, which was composed by Fabrizio Mancinelli. He didn’t slack, delivering the same kind of passion as heard in some of his previous work such as Mushka, Here After, and Jumpman. All of which were mature outings. Fabrizio’s approach to Out of the Box could have been easily applied to a high budget fantasy for the big screen and it would have stuck the landing.<\/p>\n

The film’s art direction keeps the film feeling formal, unlike the cheap martial arts cartoons we often run into at discount stores or find in DVD bins. Nothing about it looks cheap, and its visual style maintains a striking balance of vibrant colors and grounded fantasy. This can be credited to the works of Wanchana Intrasombat, who’s modest resume features art department work for Kena: Bridge of Spirits, and Despicable Me 4. Out of the Nest is Intrasombat’s first formal release as an Art Director, and what they achieved deserves to occupy a screen just like Gru and his Minions.<\/p>\n

With the art direction and music composure working so well with the narrative, it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that Out of the Nest was someone’s favorite animation release in recent years. Out of the Nest will be released in Thailand and China in September 2024, and thanks to Well Go USA, Out of the Nest will be available at home just in time for the holiday breaks. Families will enjoy a fresh, yet familiar, story to sit and watch together. A feel-good story of triumph, the discovery of self-worth, and good triumphing over evil. Arthur the Billy Goat and the seven royal chicks that hatch in his care are at home in your film collection with the likes of other animated fantasy outings like Puss in Boots, How to Train Your Dragon, and yes… Even Kung Fu Panda, which Out of the Nest would pair well with as a fun double-feature.<\/p>\n

Out of the Nest hits streaming on November 11th<\/sup> and pre-orders are open for DVD and Blu Ray through Well Go USA and supporting retailers.<\/p>\n
