As all three of the Strangers trilogy were filmed at once, with the same writers and director, I should expect characters doing incredibly dumb things, oblivious to the villains right next to them, and just overall eye-rolling moments. After all, why would there be a sudden jump in quality for something filmed as one movie, even with reshoots after the first entry? So fool me a third time, that’s on me for willingly sitting down for a third assault on my intelligence. But, for The Strangers: Chapter 3, as a series closer, I did expect follow-through on set-ups across the previous in Chapter 1 and Chapter 2, picking up ideas dropped along the way, and a sense of a plan as Mara continues ot try to survive her week of terror of being a… stranger… in the small town of Venus, Oregon.

But the Renny Harlin film is marginally better than the others. Thankful for that. Not a dumb remake of the 2008 film, or an empty, endless chase of the second “chapter” (no CGI boar this time), there are ideas here, even if they didn’t come to fruition. There’s a specific mean streak that might have worked better across the other films, or in a different movie. It holds uncomfortably long on the upped gore in a way of the tragedy of the situation Maya and a handful of random victims get into. I wonder if these moments came from reshoots, as they feel rather different than the rest. The gore isn’t anything special, but it is highly bloody. So that’s something. Harlin moves away from the extreme close-ups of the other films and shoots in a less grating way. So perhaps he watched his dailies, saw that, and changed it for later in the shoot. Too bad scriptwriters Alan R. Coehn and Alan Freedland (based on characters created by Bryan Bertino) didn’t fix their script as they went.

There’s an interesting idea in blurring the line between victim and killer. Maya, having dispatched Pin-Up at the climax of part 2, is attempted to be groomed by Scarecrow, Gabriel Basso actually trying to find something in his unmasked scenes… go him, to replace his lost love (more flashbacks to their past add nothing to the trilogy, hell, they detract due to how awful and pointless they are). A very good idea, how a situation like this might change someone, how killing alters a person, and maybe finds they have a bloodlust unrealized before. But it’s for naught, like any other plotting in this series; it’s dropped before it can get interesting. Doesn’t help that our lead, Madelaine Petsch, doesn’t provide much to work with. She changes out her single, confused facial expression for a completely blank one. One can say it’s a “resigned to situation,” but she gives nothing to us, her character, or those she’s with. Instead, outside of a few moments, Maya continues to be one of the most ineffectual final girls, blandly working through, often making the worst decisions possible (at least her golden nails stay perfect to match the obviously applied face blood). Seriously, early in the film, she steals the Sheriff’s SUV, and while speeding away, starts looking for … something…who knows, there’s nothing she needs there? in the passenger seat, and promptly crashes into a tree at 50 miles per hour. An SUV that apparently self-repairs overnight, all Christine-like as he’s back in one the next day? You can’t tell me a town of 450 people has a fleet of tricked-out police vehicles.

The victim-to-killer subplot is just one that fizzles out across these films. Vague spoilers, I guess, in a minute, more for what doesn’t happen than what does. The cult/extreme church situation set up in the first film and touched on in the second? Nothing. What of the other masks seen in the first cabin? Nah. Is the town possibly in on it? Nope, but we get another “acting uncomfortable to pushy outsiders” bit at the diner when Madeline’s sister, her husband, and their bodyguard/driver/something, played by Rachel Shenton, George Young, and Miles Yekinniall, give baffling, odd performances, arrive to… be idiots and add nothing. But yeah, this goes nowhere. We learn more about targeting strangers, but an additional fold in going after folks passing by, staying at a motel 7 miles away, lessens the idea of a killer town. You mean to tell me there’s been a string of very violent murders in the same room of the moldy (seriously, this place should not be open, but somehow has monogrammed robes?) murder motel, and it’s been unnoticed? You can clean it up, but there are parts you can’t hide. One victim in this room is clearly coming from Venus when she asks the clerk (Pin-Up) for directions to Venus. Weird. How in the world has no one noticed the sheer number of people vanishing while stopping for the night in this specific town? Not even this one motel?

That’s only a handful of the facepalmingly dumb moves within. The Barbarian-like basement in the woods? Speaking of Barbarian, at least Richard Brake gets more to do this time, even if he’s sleepwalking through it. There is a very funny scene of his sheriff trying to move a body bag in the middle of the day, in the open. Luckily, no one seems to notice anything in this town. Except for the people very obviously following him. This scene takes place in broad daylight, but its implications and follow-up don’t occur until hours later. What was happening in the rest? Anyway, folks are often able to do things that they would never expect to make a scene; people know where others are for no reason except the film needs it. Folks still make dumb moves, like haging out in a random “abandoned” trailer (that is totally not).. Because? Le Sigh.

So much of this review is just how dumb everything is. Because it is. It’s insulting. Yet, I sat through all three of these. The first two times it was in an empty theater, and I missed something. The snickers. So much snickering and “oh gods” in my audience. Maybe I liked it more because I had others commemorating the badness than stewing, but no matter: Strangers Chapter 3 is a bad movie, capping an atrocious trilogy of bad decisions, unfollowed plot threads, abandoned ideas, and perhaps the dumbest characters in the history of horror.

Slightly better than the other entries, Renny Harlin’s The Strangers Chapter 3 limps to an ending.

[12
477
post-51638","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","tag-horror
["GET
