Filmed for only $30,000, it is a celebration of what independent genre filmmaking can be. Overall, the script is strong. The lore of the world unveils naturally, no small feat in Fantasy filmmaking. There wasn’t frontloading of exposition or long speeches filling in backstory. This is always a challenge in Fantasy. How to build a world in two hours or less. It also highlights that a strong vision and storytelling can make up for a low budget. There were a few spots that could have been tightened to keep the plot moving forward and focused, but that’s a small quibble in what is otherwise a strong narrative. Even more remarkable, the film was made during the pandemic, so beyond the budgetary restrictions, the added limitations imposed during that time we all remember too well.

Naomi McDougall Jones as Ida has the challenging job of often acting solo on the screen for large chunks of the movie. This is no easy feat and something a lesser actor would struggle with. The audience will be engaged because she is engaging. Her performance is thoughtful and compelling. In a genre where it’s easy to be too broad, she remains grounded. Her strong performance helps anchor the entire movie. Not to be outdone, Scott Beehner as the Scarlet Prince relishes his role as the film’s villain. The beats of his character are familiar to any viewer of genre cinema, but it is still great fun to watch him play such an entertaining villain. The cast commits to the world being built, which goes a long way in keeping us invested in the world being created.

Filmed in exotic…Idaho…the filmmakers are smart in how they use the natural environment to heighten the story. This gives it a feel of a higher budget than it actually has. The sweeping cinematography gives the film a scope far beyond its budget, showcasing the region in such a striking way that Idaho’s tourism bureau might want Dos Goats on speed dial. There is also a brilliant use of natural light that helps build the atmosphere of the world. Further heightening the cinematography was the score by Joanna Karselis. Heavy on atmosphere, her score helped to fill in the longer stretches that feature little to no dialogue. It helped to set the stage for the mood and the world this all took place in and worked in tandem with some beautiful camerawork to elevate the entire film.

Dos Goats have created a film that feels more expensive than it is. It’s a return to a time when indie films were a place to find original stories and unique ideas. With strong performances, an interesting story, and some truly lovely visuals, Suffer is worth a watch in a sea of big-budget fare.

Available on Prime Video and Apple TV.

The beloved Queen Emmeline is dead.
