A young filmmaker captures protests while working his way to the head of the NIH to plead for more research into AIDS medications.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Written and directed by Trace Pope, this short film\u00a0takes\u00a0a very specific\u00a0time in the AIDS crisis, when people, gay and ally, were over the lack of action from the people in charge and started pushing harder and louder.\u00a0The writing and directing are\u00a0interesting, and the story\u00a0takes\u00a0an approach that leads the viewer to expect something quite different and a take on the subject that feels like it connects with the style of the film once the story gets going.\u00a0The film as a whole feels panicked in a\u00a0way;\u00a0it has an energy that is hard to pinpoint, one that can lead to losing the attention of the viewer at times if they are not 100% invested.\u00a0Thankfully, this becomes easier to manage upon rewatching it. The way the story blends the dramatic scripted side of it with what looks to be potential archival footage from\u00a01990,\u00a0and the protest(s) helps create that energy and a bit of chaos that could be considered good\u00a0for the film for those who have the capacity to keep focus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cast here is\u00a0somewhat minimal\u00a0in terms of\u00a0the main\u00a0players. Quite a few people are seen in scenes having minimal interactions\u00a0and, in the background,\u00a0filling\u00a0out the world\u00a0the story is representing.\u00a0The main cast is solid, giving\u00a0really good\u00a0performances that work for the film and subject at hand. The lead of Jamie is played by Elliot Roy\u00a0Rensky\u00a0who has and gives the right energy for the part and for the film. Playing a character based well-known figure, Dr. Fauci, is Henry Storrs who does decent work as\u00a0well,\u00a0but something in his performance comes off\u00a0maybe\u00a0smarmy,\u00a0for lack of a better term, or\u00a0perhaps his\u00a0energy is off compared with the other cast members. The supporting cast does decent as well, giving performances made to pull forward that of\u00a0Rensky\u00a0and\u00a0allowing for\u00a0his character to be the center of everything to help pass the message.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The cinematography here feels a bit all over the place with work by Devon Johns and what looks\u00a0to be\u00a0archival footage. The dychotomy of these images ends up\u00a0feeling at\u00a0odds with each style, creating a visual world that is both interesting and harder to keep up with.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0like two worlds colliding and the camera watching it all not being sure where it wants to be and how to\u00a0want\u00a0to bring it all to the screen.\u00a0The editing by Eliza Loyola and Trace Pope brings these sequences together with a bit of chaos and a bit frenetic energy, giving the film this feeling of urgency.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Silence = Death is an interesting short film that may not be for everyone due to how it is filmed and edited, but the subject is important and the fact it manages to\u00a0create a mood, educate, and pass a message means this 16 minutes short film succeeds in more than features often do with 7 times the runtime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
