\nWhen Clara takes a nanny job with a soon-to-be mother, her life spirals into a dark fairy tale.

\nGood Manners is a genre-bending fever dream, the likes of which I’ve never seen before and will probably never see again. If you want to experience a horror film for Women in Horror Month here at Cinema-Crazed, and you want to be consistently caught off guard in some of the best ways possible, I highly recommend that you go into this movie blind. The film is a Portuguese dark fantasy that has a slow start, and chaotic second half, that pulls you into a narrative and then shifts gears into something completely different. It can be found streaming for free, with English subtitles, over on TUBI. Everything after this paragraph should be considered spoiler territory.<\/p>\n

Written and directed by creative duo Juliana Rojas and Marco Dutra, Good Manners follows the journey of Clara, a struggling nanny who’s looking for work to avoid eviction. Her luck changes when she meets Ana, a wealthy woman whose family turned their backs on her during her pregnancy. With the child’s arrival closing in, Ana employs Clara as live-in staff. She runs the errands, preps the meals, and helps maintain the large apartment they now share. Over the course of their time together, Clara and Ana begin to form a passionate bond. Their relationship, and Ana’s increasingly unpredictable behavior, set the tone for the first hour of the film. As you watch the dramatic thriller, and maybe start to get a little bored with it, Clara asks Ana who the father of her child is. You’re suddenly hit with a series of barely animated drawings that let us know that Ana’s child is far from normal, it’s the offspring of a werewolf that soon rips its way out of Ana during a full moon, leaving Clara to take care of it.<\/p>\n

If the last few sentences of this review felt like getting splashed in the face with a cup of water, I can assure you it’s even more jarring when you don’t see the animated segment coming. Nothing about the entire first act could possibly prepare you for Ana’s death, or the presence of an oddly well done, practical, Werewolf puppet. Before you can recover the rest of the movie takes off. Clara is now raising Joel, the seven year old werewolf that killed her lover at birth. Clara does everything she can to make sure Joel has a normal childhood with a few extreme exceptions. Joel isn’t allowed to eat meat, and he remains chained up in a padded room during the full moon to protect people from what he transforms into. Or perhaps to protect him from an outside world that would demonize him. Either way, things get rocky when Joel realizes that he doesn’t know his father, and realizes that he looks nothing like his mother. Now Clara has to deal with Joel’s mood swings, which increase after a babysitter gives him steak for the first time.<\/p>\n

Good Manners is dramatic, goofy, sincere, hilarious, and oddly endearing. Two scenes slip into school-play territory, complete with abrupt stage lights, the final act gives us one of the cutest monstrosities I’ve ever seen, and one scene features a cop on a Segway scooter that got more laughs out of me than Paul Blart. Juliana Rojas previously gave us a similarly whimsical look at horror with her 2014 film, Necropolis Symphony. Together with Marco Dultra, who she worked with on 2011’s award winning Hard Labor, Juliana gives us a wholly unique outing that my friend accurately called \u201cA two-hour long Goosebumps episode for adults.\u201d. I couldn’t agree with his sentiment more, and can’t think of a better way to describe the overall vibe that Good Manners brings to the table. It opens up like The L-Word meets Hannibal and closes with you amused and asking, \u201cWhat did I just watch?\u201d<\/p>\n
