The Most Dangerous Game released in 1932 and introduced audiences to the concept of elites hunting people for sport. Ever since then, the concept has been revisited with different settings, genres, and tone. The Running Man (1987) gave us Arnold Schwarzenegger in a dystopian future, where the government put whistleblowers through a game show that had people placing bets on who would die first, and what hunter would kill them. Ice-T portrayed a homeless man who’s taken on a hunting trip by a wealthy entrepreneur who conveniently fails to explain that he’s the prey in 1994’s Surviving the Game. The films are Thriller, Science Fiction, and Action, that all share a common thread. When 2019’s Ready or Not graced us, it did so with a similar premise but as a Comedy \/ Horror flick and it came with an original narrative that felt like a breath of fresh air in a world of rehashed concepts. The film worked as a standalone experience in such a beautiful way and I never expected to see a sequel. When Ready or Not 2: Here I Come was announced, I was equally excited and concerned. Would this be a worthwhile sequel or an attempt to capture lightning in a bottle for a second time?<\/p>\n

Samara Weaving returns as Grace MacCaullay, the world’s luckiest unlucky bride. When we last saw her at the end of Ready or Not, she was sitting on the steps in front of her in-laws’ burning manor, drenched in blood, and lighting a cigarette. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come brings us right back to this very moment, and segues into the next day flawlessly. Grace is rushed to the hospital where she meets up with her estranged sister, Faith. Played by Kathryn Newton, Faith is only brought into the story because Grace never removed her as an emergency contact. Before either of them can figure out how to address the other one, They’re both kidnapped and taken to a compound by \u201cThe Lawyer\u201d, an ominous character played by Elijah Wood. The Lawyer eventually explains to Grace that she is now a target for rich occultists who wish to lay claim to the position she unknowingly left open by surviving the prior night. Grace and Faith now find themselves hunted by four families who have to adhere to a strict series of rules. They can only have one member from each family on the hunt at a time. The hunters aren’t permitted to kill one another, are restricted to weaponry that was in use during the era in which their lineage entered the cult, and have until dawn to end the hunt. Same game, different day.<\/p>\n

Samara Weaving brings the same energy to this installment as she had in the first one, and her bitter sibling rivalry with Kathryn Newton feels natural. Newton matches Weaving’s effort step-by-step, and the duo’s chemistry now make the first film feel like it’s missing that extra on-screen energy. Elijah Wood is another fantastic inclusion to this follow-up, bringing a charming and factually sinister element to the lore. Sara Michelle Geller is also a very welcome addition. The Buffy star plays Ursula Danforth, sister to Shawn Hatosy’s Titus Danforth. Where Weaving and Newton show us two separated and bitter siblings working together to survive, Gellar and Hatosy display the opposite as close siblings who begin to drift apart when power comes into question. Everyone here has the pedigree we hope for when it comes to entertaining horror. Weaving starred in The Babysitter films for Netflix, Newton shines in Freaky and Lisa Frankenstein, Wood comes from Cooties and Toxic Avenger, and Hatosy gets to add another horror title to his resume after his three episode run of Fear the Walking Dead. The cast all find themselves perfectly \u201cat home\u201d in the genre and within this film. Each scene puts a spotlight on pure talent brought on by a group of actors who genuinely love what they’re doing.<\/p>\n

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is written and directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, with Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy contributing to writing and Tyler Gillett also directing. Usually when I see so many names on a creative team, I worry that there are too many cooks in the kitchen. That isn’t the case here. This crew have worked with one another for years and their efforts have spoken for themselves. Matt, Tyler, Guy, and Murphy all worked on the first Ready or Not. Matt, Tyler and Guy also worked on Abigail and the SCREAM franchise, while Guy and Murphy knew one another from such projects as the television series Stan Against Evil. Nobody was out of their element on this one. The writing and directing came from a team effort of folks who know exactly how to entertain a horror loving audience who have a dark sense of humor. That comes front and center in this sequel that currently reviews just as well, and sometimes even better, than the original installment that it grew from. With plenty of blood, violence, laughs, and more of Samara Weaving’s iconic scream… Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is a perfect sequel worth seeing by anyone who found themselves enjoying the first installment.<\/p>\n
